How To Find An Agent in EVE Online August 12, 2007

I originally posted this as a reply to a comment on another post. But then I decided that this question probably comes up often enough that I ought to make a post out of it, both to share how I find and agent and to see if somebody else will comment with a better method.
There are a number of ways to find agents. This is how I do it.
- Go to the character sheet in game and select the “Standings” option.
- From there select the tab labeled “Liked By.”
- There will be a list of umbrella entities, factions, shown at the top of the page, like “Caldari State” and “The Servant Sisters of EVE.” . Click on the info button for one of them.
- In the info window that comes up, click on the “Member Corps” tab.
- The list of member corps will each have their own info button. Click on one of them and select the “Agents” tab.
- The agents tab list the corp agents, divided up into those available to you and those not.
You may find that some of those corporations do not have agents at all. The Jove Empire seems to have no agents.
Some corporations will have agents, but your standing with them will be such that none are available to you. I have no luck with Outer Ring Excavations, or ORE.
Those that do have agents available to you will show you the location, level, and quality of the agent. The higher the level, the tougher the missions. Similarly, higher quality agents give both better rewards, but their missions are tougher as well.
Most corporations seem to have enough agents that they are divided up into divisions such as “Security” or “Administration.” The division to which an agent belongs will dictate the mix of missions which they will offer. A list of what mix of missions each division offers is available here.
[Update: Eric linked this chart of mission mixes in the comments. I thought it was worth adding to the post. Thanks!]
Now once you can find agents, the next question will likely be which factions, corporations, or divisions should you choose to run missions with.
The answer to that is still a mystery to me. Should I concentrate on one division in one corporation in a single faction? Should I spread myself around? What are the advantages and disadvantages? All of that I am still uncertain about.
The EVE Online Players Guide does have a section on agents, missions, and such, including research missions. It does not answer my outstanding questions, but it does have a lot of information. You can find the entry on missions here.

This is indeed one of the regularly asked questions on the rookie channel :).
Oh btw, it’s better to stick to one corp so your agent points wont be spread out. It’s only since the revelations II patch that you accumulate points for one corp. It used to be just for one agent. The division will only determine what sort of mission you’ll get.

You should definitely try and stick to a limited number of corporations, for several reasons. You will obviously increase standing and loyalty points at a greater rate with focused effort, also a good bonus is the ability to eventually create jump clones at stations belonging to a corporation with which you have a standing of 8 or above (it might be 7, I forget).
Also, if you’re a miner, picking a corporation with a station close to your “hunting grounds” will decrease refining taxes – I believe with decent refining skills, you should be getting 100% at standing 6 or 7. Definitely helps. :)
Love reading about your Eve experiences, keep it up!
Man, so much detail in EVE, even in the missions you accept/decline. Crazy stuff, and it really makes discovering EVE Online so much fun.
Great info in the original post, and from you opelwerk, keep it up for the noobs like myself just getting into EVE.
Good info there, and I like that chart you have linked Eric because it also includes the connection skill, expensive though they are.
Ehm, ok… I’ve done the “look for an agent” thing on the map, on my character sheet, on everthing, and all I find are agents thatm, once I waste the 10 jump trip to them, say they dont have any work for me… I love complexity and all, but where am I screwing up so bad that I cant even find an agent to give me a damn mission?
Simon: it’s been a long time since I’ve needed to look for agents, but drop me a line ingame under the name Debes Sparre and I’ll try and set you up.
The only times I have run off to an agent only to find they have no work for me, it has turned out I inadvertantly chose a agent listed under “Not Available to You.”
You might try grabbing the skill “Connections” and training it up a bit. This improves your standing with friendly factions which, in turn, makes more agents available to you.
