Did I Accidently Waste a Wish? February 11, 2011

Seriously.

I was just complaining about not being able to ride my mount through that little section near the flight master in Stormwind.

No Mounts Allowed!

Only now, about two weeks later, it is fixed.

Ride here? Be my guest!

I didn’t see anything about it in the 4.0.6 patch notes.

Strange.

That was a search term that brought somebody here.

فأر أبيض

That’s a new one on me.

Actually, it isn’t a new one on me.

It means, approximately, white mouse according to Google.

In Arabic, of course.

Interesting fact: When you cut and paste Arabic, it goes from right to left.  Which makes sense, since the language is read from right to left.  I’m just surprised to find that Microsoft knows that.  And makes it work right.  Sort of.

If you’re going to paste Arabic into a post that is otherwise in English, write the English part first, then do your pasting.  Because once you’ve pasted that into your text editor, the cursor can’t decide which direction it is going.  There is the Microsoft touch I was looking for.

But we were talking about white mice.  Or “white mouse” rather.

I get a surprising number of people coming here for that particular search term because I once did a post that featured a white mouse picture.  The post was about Derek Smart.

But nobody comes here for anything about Derek Smart.

They’re here for the picture.  This picture.

The internet.

It is apparently organized like my mother-in-law’s house.

Really.  That isn’t a mother-in-law joke.

That one is reserved just for my mother-in-law.

If you’ve been to her house, you would understand.

Calm Words in This Time of Rift Crisis February 10, 2011

A fresh translation to sooth your troubled heart:

And you will hear of hype and rumors of hype.

See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the ship date is not yet.

For blog will rise against blog, and comment against comment, and there will be exaggeration and flames in various places.

All these are but the beginning of the release pains.

Then they will deliver up to the official forums and ask to sticky any apostasy, and these will be hated by all nations for the game’s sake.

And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another

And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.

And because beta access will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

And then the release of the game will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the ship date will have come.

It gets a little less clear after that, taking after some guy named Dan in accounting and then heading into a passage which I think means you should take the launch date off from work, unless you are pregnant or nursing.

But I think the main gist conforms to Keen’s graph.

Anyway, let these words comfort and guide you through these trying times.

The 7th beta event is now, by most definitions, a full open beta.

If you like to try before you buy, here is your opportunity.

Personally, I’ll probably be over here on the 15th.  We’ll see what that new progression server looks like.

Wait… I’ll Get What in Which Game if I Pre-Order from Steam? February 10, 2011

If you pre-order Rift on Steam, you’ll get in-game items in Team Fortress 2.

TF 2 Weapons... from Rift... or something

You’ll also get some sort of hat in Rift as well, but I’m still stuck on getting the weapons in TF2.

I can’t tell if this is crazy or awesome, and not just because I am not buying Rift and I do not own TF2.

I guess you can do this sort of thing when you own the distribution channel as well as some of the games on that channel.

You’ll never get something like this at Wal-Mart.

Obligatory EVE Online New Avatar Post February 10, 2011

I swear, I went into this thinking I was going to create a completely different look.  Meclin managed to get a Caldari model that looked a bit like Harrison Ford and another with a hint of Jim Carrey.  I thought I could manage something equally noble.  I certainly wasn’t going to end up with another avatar like my first experiment.

And then I tried on the sunglasses.

Once those were on, the techno beat started going in my brain and I ended up with this.

Wilhelm Arcturus... wait, it says that already

And the halo effect background… suddenly I was St. Diggler, patron saint of the Caldari disco mix.  Or something.

Well, I’ll only have to live with that choice… forever.   At least there wasn’t an eyeliner malfunction.

And it is better than my original avatar.

Somebody set up us the bomb!

I did find out, however, that you cannot create an avatar without pants.

That tidbit just in case you were thinking about going for the… um… news anchor look.

How soon until we get an ISK shop or a clothing manufacturing skill in the game to give us some better clothing choices?

2011 – Second MMO Checkpoint: Rift Edition February 9, 2011

Here we are at my second follow-up post to my MMO outlook post for 2011, and we’re going to talk about Rift.

Rift is shiny.

Shiny even in battle

It looks good, even from the moment you step into the game.

Peeking out into the Guardian starter zone

It is hard to credit Trion Worlds enough.  They have handled this game like pros, from the way the game looks and feels to the slow drip open beta events that have kept people clamoring for more. (This is something I think Blizzard totally blew for Cataclysm, at least from a marketing perspective.  The all summer/fall continuous open beta seemed to take the edge off for people.)

They have grabbed all the good stuff, the stuff people have shown they love, buffed them up and put them in Rift.

We all love achievements, right?

Everything is familiar yet up a notch or two in quality and presentation.  Simple things just look better.

I mean, look at those buttons.  They are comprehensible!  (Well, to me at least.)  How many MMOs do you start off in and the buttons for key functions look this good?  A tiny little feature, way down in the lower left hand corner, but indicative of the whole package.

And then there are the skill icons.

action action bar!

Those skill icons are all done so very well.  Granted, I got a bunch of skills pretty quickly in the game (I have to give Wolfshead a nod. While you need to get that 2nd soul pretty quick to to fill the skill voids in all of the classes I tried, I think maybe that 3rd soul comes in a little too soon.) but the icons are all clear and distinct.  And you know what that first one does for sure, just by looking at it, and most of the rest are some form of “hit the bad guy, hard!”

And the soul tree, any veteran MMO player will get it at first glance.

<make Soul Train joke here>

Everything is… well… shiny.  Like the song from Cats Don’t Dance, Trion Worlds seems to get that people like it Big and Loud.

Actual size Level Up text

And shiny.

When you get into the world, which is dark and has a feel similar to that of Warhammer Online (not to mention using the same font for player names), action is close at hand.  And you do not have to go too far down the quest chain to run into that which gives the game its name, rifts.

These are big zone-wide events and you are invited.  Just click the “Join Public Group” button that appears at the top of and you’re on the team.

I'm in the raid now!

And, being open beta with a large and enthusiastic following, prime time Rift hunts had the feel of mass migrations as people thundered across the landscape.

It's the tier 1 Telara marathon!

At midnight when I couldn’t get to sleep and logged in for a while, things were a little less tenable.

The whole package is shiny, familiar, and seemingly as tight as a drum.

At least for those first 10 levels.  I rolled up a few characters, but never went past 10 with any of them.  I wanted more breadth, trying out classes on both Guardian and Defiant sides of the world, those being the two opposing factions of Telara.

All of the things I like about other MMOs are there.  Which is, of course, a problem.

If World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, and EverQuest II disappeared tomorrow, I’d be all over this like white on the proverbial polished rice.

But those three games, and many more, are still around and won’t be going anywhere any time soon.  I mean, look at EverQuest.  It is turning 13 soon and it is still hanging in there.  They even launched a new progression server for it.

So my anxiety about the game seems to have proven true.  It is more of the same stuff I am already consuming, and I can only consume so much at once.

Furthermore, Rift doesn’t do anything about the things I don’t like about MMOs.

Servers for example.

Or shards, which is the term Trion Worlds has chosen.  But servers, shards, realms, or whatever, here is something that only EverQuest II Extended seems to have come close to solving.

There it was, open beta, and Trion already had a long list of shards, all of which were full, something which seems to indicate that the “I want to play with my friends, but they are on a different shard” issue is going to replay the way it always does.

And, of course, there is the whole level thing, the other great separator that keeps people from playing with their friends.

These are issues that I’ve had to reconcile through various means already in other games, and I groan a bit at the thought of having to do it again.

If I was tired of the games I already had on my plate, Rift would be a fine choice.  It has much to recommend it, as long as you are looking for a game that is clearly located in the center of the fantasy MMORPG genre and proud of it.

But with my plate already heaped with fantasy MMORPG goodness that I am invested in because of friends (WoW), lore (LOTRO), or nostalgia (anything involving Norrath), I really have to finish with a couple of those before I look into Rift.

So I won’t be pre-ordering.  I won’t be playing on day one.

And that certainly is not because of any game issue.  It just isn’t 1999 or 2004 any more.  There are a lot of choices for games and I can’t play them all.  And while the game looks solid, I just didn’t see anything, nor have I read about anything, that stands out as a must-have differentiator for me.

I might get back to Rift at some later date.  It certainly looks like it will do well enough that it will still be there waiting for me.  But for now, Rift is scratched.

How long until Star Wars: The Old Republic comes out? I think either it or Tera are the next games on my 2011 watch list due to ship.

World of Tanks to Come in a Box February 9, 2011

Or so I gather, since they sent me a press update with the updated box art now that they have received their ESRB rating.

Tanks in a Box

The alternate title for this post: Tanks for Teens.

Having played the game, the teen rating seems a bit much.  The description for the Teen rating says:

Contains content that might be considered unsuitable for children under 13 years of age. Titles in this category may contain more intense violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, blood, simulated gambling, and/or use of strong language (which is uncensored)

I wonder what prompted the ESRB to choose that rating as part of their process?  That is the same rating as WoW, EverQuest II, Lord of the Rings Online, and most other MMOs I looked up where your avatar personally hacks humanoids to death.  In World of Tanks, it is just vehicles getting knocked out.

Or maybe online games just get Teen by default due to the chat channel.

I Never Cared About Eyeliner Before, Now We’re All Worried… February 8, 2011

Something that caught my eye… heh…  in the EVE Online Incursion 1.1.2 patch notes, which I finally got around to reading.  This is the sort of thing that the new character creator has got us fretting about now.

Some eyeliners were not displaying the correct color. This has now been fixed. Characters who were incorrectly rendered with white eyeliner when they chose black will have their characters automatically corrected and rerendered.

This makes me want to listen to Rip Her To Shreds, which is probably just a side effect of the color of the text.

I still haven’t made a new avatar for Wilhelm yet.  Have to do that.  I guess I’ll see about the eyeliner thing if I end up in a Clockwork Orange mood.

On the other hand, I am kind of bummed that I missed out on the Golden Retriever jokes.

The Retriever ship has been updated so that it no longer appears to be gold in color. CONCORD is greatly relieved, knowing that there will be a reduction in bad dog jokes.

And I always love these sorts of bugs.

An extra, invisible tab on the login screen has been removed.

Life in software.

Not Even FarmVille Hits The Lowest Common Denominator February 7, 2011

One of the common cries of the hard core when complaining about changes to a game to make it “easier” or “more accessible” is that the company in question is attempting to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

The next time you see a player making that complaint, remember that somewhere out there somebody felt the need to write the book FarmVille for Dummies.

Really, the lowest common denominator is a lot lower than you and I can probably imagine.
