Rewards and More Training

Late last week I hit the magic mission number with Wilhelm and he was given a storyline mission.

You get a storyline mission in EVE Online after you complete 16 regular missions.  The rewards for storyline missions are usually significant both in cash and items as well as in the increase in standings you get with the faction that offers you the mission.  I have gotten many valuable implants as well as not inconsiderable amounts of ISK for.

Basically, you do not want to pass up a storyline mission.

The missions themselves come in various flavors.  Often you need only acquire something off of the market like 8,000 units of kernite or 10,000 units of omber to complete the mission.  Once I was given five million ISK for hauling a piece of paper four systems over.

And some times you actually have to do some fighting for your prize.

This time around a drew a fighting mission called Shipyard Theft.  While the exchange of goods or delivery missions are easy, and actual combat mission is usually more lucrative.

The mission itself was worth just shy of 8 million ISK when rewards and bounties were counted, and probably a good chunk more if you include the salvage.  But the best part was the implant that came with finishing the mission.  No mere attribute augmenting implant this time around, but the thing for the miner who has just about everything: A mining foreman mindlink.

This implant is probably the most valuable item I have ever received as a mission reward.

Of course, everything has a cost of its own.  I could sell it for quite a nice price, but if I want to actually use it… well… in EVE there is always one more skill to train.

To use this implant I need Cybernetics V.  I am already trained up to Cybernetics IV, so it is just a matter of dedicating nearly 13 days of training time to get there.

And once I have that, I need the skill Mining Director trained up to level V as well.  Mining Director does not seem to be that expensive.  The training time is more of an issue, as it will take 26 days to train it to level V, making it 39 days overall to use the implant.

I can get right on that training plan once I finish up my current 20 day training plan to cap off my missile skills and then the 14 day training plan to sharpen up freighter handling abilities.  So I might be able to use this implant in 73 days.  And, at that point, I’ll want to figure out Mining Foreman Link modules, about which I have no clue currently.

That is, if I do not come up with some other training plan I must have in the mean time.  I have a lot of training plans sitting around that I have not quite gotten to because there has always been something more urgent.

But that is EVE Online.  You have to make tough decisions in the short term, but if you have patience, you get what you want in the long term.

My memory (getting hazier by the week) of Eve’s storyline missions is that they improved your standing with some factions while decreasing it with others. I could see this being a problem for a trader character if you , for example, became so unpopular with the Caldari that you became kill on Sight in Jita.

@mbp – I kept an eye on that early on when I moved from Caldari to Amarr space. It seems that, in the grand scheme of thing, Amarr and the Caldari are allied an in accord, so my standings with the Caldari State in general and the Caldari Navy in particular have remained steady.

My standing with the Minmatar and Gallente… well, let’s say we’re not exchanging Christmas cards any more.

But I trade exclusively in Amarr and Caldari space, so I am okay. I am not sure what you would do if you wanted to cover the trade routes in all four empires. Not run missions I suppose.

Well, it is not like I cannot do anything else for 73 days while I wait for the skills to train.

It is more like the ultimate in long term planning games. Hey, I got a new toy. If I stay on track I can use it some time in late May.

Okay, maybe it is the ultimate patience game.

It’s the ultimate Excel game! hehe ;)

Grats on the new toy. Just think how awesome it will be to finally plug that bad boy in your head.

Lol, i use excel for EVE to plan my shipbuilding.

Nice toy Wilhelm, how much does it flog for on average?

I think i’d probably donate (flog) that to my corp if i got it, i don’t mine much but others in my corp do and that could be a very nice item to have installed on a mining run.

I trained up my alt for mining foreman / director and got cybernetic V for that mindlink. In a group of miners, a pilot with that in there head and a couple mining warfare links on can really increase yeild.

What? You want numbers!? Sigh. Just a sec…. *loads EFT*

A pilot with that mindlink in an Orca with two harvesting warfare links active can increase the performance of a hulk by 33%. That means you can make a gang of three hulks perform with the efficiency of four.

You said the right word though Kirith, Orca. The one thing to remember Wilhelm is that the mindlink doesn’t give a bonus directly to mining, but instead increases the bonus that the Mining Foreman Command Link gives out. So that means you will have to be sitting in a Battlecruiser, Command Ship or an Orca to have that command link fitted. So remember, no mining for you!!!

I got one of those in my mining foreman – very, very worth the cost of training for the serious miner. I usually camp him in a command ship (Hurricane for now, Claymore sometime in March) so he can use ship-based mining links (http://eve-online.itemdrop.net/eve_db/items/module/gang_coordinator/mining_foreman_link_-_laser_optimization/). If you wanna preview the effect, feel free to join me in fleet mining ops – I’m currently working in Amarr/Kador, Mining Foreman = Markosias.

Do you multibox? ‘Cuz like Rieger said, the foreman needs to be in a command ship (or battlecruiser if you don’t have access to command ships yet) and I have an additional Hulk pilot and hauler…

I’ve been having the debate over what to do with multiple accounts for awhile now… my current winner is 2 hulks with max cargo (13k, no rigs), one character with mining foreman 5. This implant would boost the 10% bonus to 15%, which is a significant boost at least (especially doubled). Wouldn’t take advantage of the other benefit to mindlinks, but I only have two accounts so I’m somewhat limited there anyhow. One orca boosting my one hulk by 33% doesn’t compare to two hulks. And one hulk running 2 MLU 2s with a hauler doesn’t compare to two hulks either.

Now when my 3rd account gets far enough along to fly something useful, then maybe I’ll reconsider some of my choices… but that’s a ways off yet.

    Stupid learning skills.

Someone doublecheck me on this, but I believe if you have 2, 3 or 4 characters, you make more profit just having them all in Hulks. Orcas only become useful above that.
