EVE Online Makes the BBC

The defeat of BoB in EVE Online was big enough to make it to the BBC it seems.

The story is short and to the point.  The best quote for me was from Mittani:

“We don’t have any advantages, so we can’t obey your stupid ‘space bushido’. We’re going to spy, we’re going to use defectors, we’re going to lie, cheat, steal and be bastards.”

Space Bushido!

But can you say “bastards” on the BBC, or is that reserved for the web site?

Thanks to my friend Steven for IM’ing me with the link!

Good thing the American media only covers SL…

Indeed a good line about the space bushido, how very goon of them.

That was the failed search for the right headline on my part. You are right, if you search on “EVE Online” on the BBC site, you’ll find multiple hits.

The essence I was going for was that the Goonswarm taking down BoB event was newsworthy to the BBC.

That an event that occurred in-game in EVE made the mainstream news seems to me to be significant, rather than the usual “Man-children flying internet spaceships,” “Game slang is creeping into the language,” or “Virtual world economies put theories to the test” level of coverage that seems to be all that bubbles up, even on the BBC site.

@Syncaine – I like that he did not go with Space Honor, Chivalry, Code of Conduct, or Ethos. He went straight to the medieval Japanese term. I think he chose it because it sounded good (it does) and because the starting sound of the word is similar to the starting sound of the word “bullshit,” which was his point.

    On the “bushido” reference…

The name of one of the TAFKABoB corps, Reikoku, is Japanese for “relentless”. TAFKABoB is now the alliance called “KenZoku”, Japanese for “family.” And, entirely tangentially, EVOL’s CEO, SirMolle, was recently associated with Sabre A’s Seppuku Warriors training corporation.

BoB was/is big on the Japanese references. The Goons notice this. :)
