Because I’ve got nothing today and because I find humor in controversy about a religion “based on a series of six movies, four of which sucked.”
Somewhere, in the back of my brain, there existed the knowledge that there was an actual Jedi religion being practiced somewhere in the vicinity of what we call “the real world.” That it was referred to as Jediism was probably in there somewhere as well, lame though the name is.
But that this religion requires its members to wear a hood at all times, and that this hood requirement was causing problems, well that was new on me. Priceless in that linked article is the response from the Tesco representative, who points out which Jedi never takes off his hood.
But like Derek Smart, Jediism is a subject that just keeps on giving.
While at that Wikipedia entry on the Jediism, when I made it to the section on media coverage, these two gems started my laughter afresh:
Jediism is often reported on the Internet and in news articles in a negative or satirical way
Jedi followers have been attacked by people dressed up as Darth Vader and stormtroopers
Okay, the first is a gimme. Wow, people make fun of a religion based on a movie! Imagine that! And, of course, this post stands as yet another example.
But the second… please, somebody find me the YouTube video of that happening. I almost fell out of my chair on that one.
And, just to bring this back to gaming, let us consider Jediism and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Is this a match made in heaven or a recipe for disaster and disappointment? Or are these guys already playing Star Wars Galaxies. And, if they are playing SWG, where do you think they stand on the NGE?
