Kunark Live on Fippy Darkpaw!

While there has been no official announcement of the vote results yet in the Time Locked Progression Servers section of the EverQuest forums, The Ruins of Kunark expansion went live yesterday on Fippy Darkpaw.

While the expansion took a bit to go live, people are able to get there now.  Pictures were posted to the forums (which I have borrowed, and would give credit if I knew where to link it) of people crowding in.

There is a bit of annoyance in the forums that race change potions from the Station Cash Store are available on the Time Locked Progression Servers, allowing anybody to become an Iksar without having to start over.  The discussion, as it generally does, falls into the “not authentic” and “this isn’t a ‘classic’ server” camps.

Of course, the key metric for progress is how soon the next set of objectives will be met to open the next expansion, the Scars of Velious.

As of this morning there, 5 of the 6 bosses have been killed and 3 of the 12 required quests have been completed.  The report in the forums said that the first boss was down within 15 minutes of the expansion going live.

The Tally of the First 24 Hours

Defeated Bosses

  • Trakanon (by Twisted Legion)
  • Venril Sathir (by Ion)
  • Talendor (by Armageddon)
  • Severilous (by Twisted Legion)
  • Gorenaire (by Citizen)

Completed Quests

  • Orb of Mastery (by Seleking of Armageddon)
  • The Scythe of the Shadowed Soul (by Corpselover of Twisted Legion)
  • Ragebringer (by Dezire of Twisted Legion)

It looks like four guilds are competing to finish off the expansion.  You can see representatives from each in the pictures above.  The initial set of bosses were taken down by Twisted Legion within 10 days of the launch of the server.

I expect that all the quests will be complete and the last boss down by the end of this coming weekend.  We shall see.  With that timeline we could see Velious open up in early July.

As of this point, I have seen no formal announcement of any of this by the EQ community team in the forums or on the main page.

Huh, interesting. The race change potion thing does seem a bit out of place. But, money’s gotta be made, I guess.

It’s also interesting to see things happen so fast. Make sense, since the strategies for how the bosses are downed have been well-established by now. But, still, seems to take away a bit when a boss is dead 15 minutes after the expansion goes live. Not quite like the good ol’ days, I guess. :)

What are your thoughts? Still going to continue with the game if the next few expansions go live in short order? Or, will things have advanced too far too fast for you?

That’s insanely too fast. I was rather looking forward to Kunark, but if all the objectives are done by the weekend and Velious opens in early July I’m just going to forget it.

I might as well play my two dozen characters on the normal servers.

@Brian – I think the race to be first is almost inevitable. Give somebody an opportunity to scribe their name on something and there will be a race to get there and do it.

The time lock was an attempt to slow things down, but in the self-selecting group of people playing, it might not have been the best plan. Sitting for 90 days in base EQ when the bosses were all down within 10 days and letting all the hard core players languish at level cap didn’t quite go as planned.

I think they should do a regular “Race to Unlock” server, where guilds compete to down the bosses and unlock the expansions, with the view of being declared the winner of the race. But that would require a bit more enthusiasm from SOE, which as I noted above hasn’t even mentioned the opening of Kunark officially. That would have been a front-pager for me.

As for our own little group, Potshot and I are caught up with Gaff in a renewed enthusiasm for EQ2, and especially the liveliness of EQ2X. Amazing what a server with lots of players at all levels can do for your interest.

So for the moment, EQ is off the “games I play” list on the side bar. (Nobody looks at that, I know.) We have been having too much fun in EQ2.

I do want to go back to Fippy Darkpaw though. I will be keeping an eye on it, and announcing the unlocks since SOE seems to be quiet on the subject. Lost Dungeons of Norrath is one expansion I would like to explore, and our little group of characters, sitting at level 21, are in a prime spot to experience it from start to finish.

I’m with the camp of player saddened by the break-neck pace being set. I would have loved to see it languish a bit longer on each xpac. At the rate being set, how long until it catches up with the regular servers? What will happen then? Will it get merged and a NEW prof server get released? The path of Fully intrigues me.

@Shadow – With the 30 Day minimum gap between expansion releases, Fippy Darkpaw should be on par with the current EverQuest expansion come November or December of 2012. November assumes that we get another EQ expansion this year and that it gets included in the Progression Server, while December assumes an additional expansion next year before November and that gets included as part of the Progression server.

My guess would be that for the final expansion, the server would just be merged into an EQLive server, probably after the holidays.

I do not remember how long the original Progression Servers, The Combine and the other one (why can I only remember one name for each pair?), but almost two years to get from launch to live seems like a longer stretch than before.

It’s a bit sad that there’s race change potions around. After I started a bit late on FP, and then fell further behind on the leveling curve, I had this plan to come back when Kunark opens. I hoped to be able to find groups easily by tagging along all those people that reroll. Oh well. Though, to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have had enough time to focus on EQ yet again anyway.
