The Instance Group Gathers in Telara

Saturday night was finally the end of the hiatus of the instance group.  After a long summer absence, which extended into the fall, we were once again together in an online game.

Rift was the game chosen, and things got off to a slow but positive start.

Everybody, for example, had a copy of the game downloaded and patched along with an account.

With the promise of an early mount and an inexpensive price, everybody except Bung opted for the collector’s edition.  Bung only had the trial version of the game.  But for a first night’s getting acquainted round, that seemed to be more than enough.

We all eventually arrived and started working on characters.  That included picking a basic class and thinking up a name.  We ended up with the following spread of characters. (I have yet to decide the universal handle by which I should refer to everybody… well, except for Earl… so I will go with what might make the most sense to anybody who has been following along for a while.)

  • Earlthecat – Bahmi Warrior (Earl)
  • Aboulhoson – Eth Mage (Potshot)
  • Hillmar – Bahmi Cleric (Me)
  • Ephemara – Kelari Rogue (Ula)
  • Jollyreaper – Kelari Mage (Bung)

Happily, we are beyond the age where you need to type something like c ‘heal’ Aboulhoson in the middle of a heated battle.

I will have to get everybody’s soul choices next time around.  I cannot even recall my own at the moment, and I am too lazy to log in.

I had actually rolled up in advance, so spent some time wandering around the initial starter area helping to answer questions and form up a group.  I nearly asked Earl what his character name was.  Silly me.  The rest of us came up with new and different handles.

Jollyreaper actually came from Bung’s son, who thought that would be a good Halloween costume.  Rather than being the Grim Reaper, he wanted to have the cloak, cowl, and scythe, but have a happy, smiling mask on along with them.  The Grim Reaper back when he enjoyed his job, pre pale horse.

Earl actually rolled up first and got out ahead of the pack… and made some of the same mistakes we all seem to have made, like that quest where you talk to the quest giver and, if you read the quest text, you know to sit tight while he activates a construct to escort you to the final quest hub.

And if you just skip the text and try to run ahead… well… chances are you will end up dying a bunch.  I was only save from that fate the first time through by my obsessive desire to make sure I have completed all the quests.

Anyway, Earl got out there and died.

I hung around waiting for Jolly and Ephemara, who I ran into at one of the early quest hubs.

Hillmar and Ephemara

Hillmar’s mail shirt looks oddly like a Cosby sweater.  Or maybe that is just me.

Having some time to kill, I actually spent some of it filling in the details and reading all the quest and related text.

It wasn’t that I did not get the story up to that point.  We were brought back to life, we are being sent back in time to save the planet, blah blah blah.

Reading this was just confirmation

But it is very in my personality to want a quick look at what is going on and to then go back and fill in the details as I am ready for them.

So I am a bit more filled in on the story so far.  I also got to see that Trion holds the opinion that bare female mid-drifts and plate armor bikinis are useful in combat for their opponent distracting value.

Men cannot avert their eyes

I also got to see a few variations of events I had not run into previously, like a sudden mass of skeletons.

Really following the dead

I linked up with Jolly and we made it through to the final battle at the portal and did that fight.

The last starter area battle begins...

We got through and were greeted with a view of another rift.

Old Telara, same as new Telara, only greener

By that time, Earl and Aboulhoson had been into Freemarch for a bit, we just needed Ephemara to catch up.  Our rather unambitious goal for the evening was merely to get everybody rolled up, through the starter area, and into Freemarch so we could meet up, collect mail, and generally be ready to start trying to work as a group.

Only Ephemara got stuck on that last fight in the starter area, which was odd, since she had done it before with her other character.  We offered advice on Skype, mostly to the effect of letting the NPCs in the area do the heavy lifting for that last fight.  But the NPCs seemed to be taking the night off, so our rogue was getting pasted.

And due to the setup, there wasn’t much we could do.  You cannot go forward again in time to help somebody out if you have already gone through the portal.  So we were stuck for a bit, at least until Abo got up and walked into the next room to help with the problem.  He is co-located with Ephemara.

After a short interruption, Ephemara made it through the time portal and into Freemarch.

We were able to collect everybody together at last for a group picture.

The Instance Group in Freemarch

Pictured above, from left to right, not including the boar and cat butts visible at the bottom of the shot, are Ephemara, Earlthecat, Hillmar, Jollyreaper, and Aboulhoson.

Now we are together and poised to move into the game.

Good to see you guys back in instances. I recently got my group back into instances as well (albeit in WoW).

I noticed that you named your character Hillmar. Do you come from cheese country?

Awesome! Glad you guys are on the move! The cleric armor gets better, I swear. My only complaint has been the lack of variety, but the wardrobe feature + armor dyes has kept me busy (and my bank account full).

Pro-Tip – Hang on to your starter clothers. If you want to rebuy them end game, there is a merchant in the capital – but those formerly free clothers are now going for a couple of platinum each. Yikes!

@Darraxus – Well, my grandfather owned a dairy farm at one time, does that count?

When pressed for a character name, especially for a large human or barbarian types, I tend towards classical Norse/Germanic names. I have Sigwerd and Vikund, and a few more like that.

This time though, I named my character after the CEO of CCP, Hilmar Petursson. Hilmar with one “L” had already been taken though, so I opted for two.

We shall see who is more successful as “Hillmar the Healer!”

@HZ – Damn, I already deleted my starter gear, it coming up as “no value.”

Looking forward to reading your adventures in Telara. Well done to everyone for making it through the tutorial zone, which I think is terrible (they both are). If that hasn’t put anyone off it can only get better from here on in.

And I didn’t know that thing about the newbie clothes, either!

Ah I see. Hillmar is also a small town in Northern California known for making cheese.

Figured since you are in SJ, that there may have been some connection there.

(I am originally from Northern California as well).

I never spent much time south of the Highway 120 line. The farm thing was more in the Escalon, Oakdale, Riverbank triangle, with occasional ventures into Ripon or Modesto.

Not withstanding the occasional disparaging reference to Turlock, anything on the far side of Modesto might as well have been on an asteroid, if you know what I mean.

Looking at the Wikipedia entry, they seem to have changed the spelling at some point from Hillmar to Hilmar. Fans of EVE as well?

And just because I cannot stop, despite being all of 90 miles from Silicon Valley, into the 80s I still needed to talk to an operator in order to make a call from Escalon to San Jose, which was in a different area code.

As far as instances go, you can use the Dungeon Finder to teleport your group to Realm of the Fae (only way for lowbie Defiants to get there really… running to Silverwood as a lowbie is semi-hard and VERY long) at level 12 or 14… I don’t recall which right now. Don’t do it, though. It’s designed for level 15-16 at minimum and is a challenge for a full group at that level even then.

Fun thing about your group — you don’t have to be Hillmar the Healer. It could be Aboulhoson the Healer instead, with Hillmar the Tank. Though tbh I don’t suggest mages heal before 16… 20 is better since that’s when they get their rez. And I don’t suggest a cleric or rogue be tank before level 18 either. Clerics need that AE strike they get at 18 and Rogues need the Rift Guard mitigation buff they get at 18 before either of them can tank, so if you plan on doing instances before then, use the warrior as your tank for sure.

My character I made on your server is named Junark. Feel free to have any and all add me to your friends lists. I’m a Bahmi cleric as well. I just love their 2H weapon animations. . . . .

Well, truth be told, I’m considering swapping in an alt that is a wee bit further along to create a bit more balance. I’ve got a bard I’d like to give a go and avoid a pure caster overload.

Still curious about the chloromancer as an alt healer though.

  9. pkudude99

Chloromancer rocks as healer! It takes a little getting used to the style, and you have to stand closer to the tank than you might think due to your Synthesis buff having a shorter range than your attack spells, but once you “get it” the chloromancer heals every bit as well (and some would argue better) than the cleric’s healing souls.

And I meant Guardian Phase buff, not Rift Guard in my prior post. Been a while since I used my rogue in Riftstalker build to remember the names of skills.

If you haven’t already found this I really recommend you take a look. Lots of hidden treasure to find. Puzzles to solve too with loot rewards for solving.

Also – the Lake of Solace not far from Meridian has 7 treasure caches and 1 puzzle to solve. The loot you get is semi-appropriate for your class and level. You can do it as early as 15 but I recommend waiting until 20. Nice armor at 15 is great but you outgrow it so fast it seems level rewards would be better.

Have fun there! My husband and I just went back recently as well. We’re on Faeblight and looking for a guild lol. :)

    Correcting my typo:

You can do it as early as 15 but I recommend waiting until 20. Nice armor at 15 is great but you outgrow it so fast it seems level 20 rewards would be better.

Chloromancer healing is excellent. People who played a Bloodmage in Vanguard say it’s something like that. My Bloodmage only got to about 15th and that was a long time ago so it’s hard for me to say, but I did find it not dissimilar to playing a Disciple except that I didn’t have to melee.

Trion have messed about with Chloromancer an awful lot since I did my one and only dungeon a couple of weeks after launch, but if I could main-heal Realm of the Fae back then, with no gear to speak of and no real understanding of the class then I’m sure you’ll have no problem.

If you know where you’re going it’s pretty simple to travel overland from Freemarch to Silverwood. Overland travel is time-consuming but not difficult in Rift. That’s solo, though. I think trying to do that trip as a group at that level would be much harder. When we did it as a duo we were always getting split up. Probably better to use the Dungeon Finder, although that won’t give you any stories to tell!
