A Free Transfer to Freeport Missed, If Only I Had Known…

The SOE sites are still running the Live Gamer ads, despite the fact that Live Gamer is out as part of the merger of EverQuest II Live and EverQuest II Extended. that is part of the whole SOE “let’s go free to play” strategy.

Outdated Ad

One thing did catch my eye with that ad though.

Free character transfers to the Bazaar and Vox servers!

And with the EverQuest II consolidation, the Bazaar server is being merged into the Freeport server.

So I could have consolidated some remaining EverQuest II characters on Freeport, if only I had that information in advance.

Because SOE shut down those free transfers already, right?

I believe you are correct, one of the FAQ’s said that these came down immediately with the F2P announcement. Amongst other potential issues, I’d heard these were actually copies rather than moves, which would have created even more character slot issues.

I have no doubt there will be free transfer tokens for veteran if not all players once the merge goes live, so I wouldn’t fret it.

You probably could technically transfer to the bazaar for free, depending on how updated their phone support is on things. You have to call in order to get moved there, and because the server used LiveGamer that was the reason it was free. I’m not sure exactly when LiveGamer vanishes, but until the exact date that it does, I bet folks can still move.

There is only one character I might want to transfer at this point, so the point is somewhat moot for me. But I thought it was an amusing loophole, especially since SOE is still running those Live Gamer ads. (And given SOE past history, they will probably keep running well into next year.)

I actually went through and deleted a pile of characters due to the merger, as I am in a funny spot. With a grandfathered Station Access account, I have more slots than people can get without buying some. But the moment that lapses… and it will eventually… I seem to fall in a crack in the rules if I read them right… I will end up either having to buy slots or delete chars. It was easier to delete the characters now. None of them had much invested in them, they were “some day I will get to you” chars.

Now I will have to remember to invest all my plat into tradeskill fuel before I let my account lapse so I don’t loose a great chunk of my money when I fall into the free category.

When you drop SA, do buy Silver. It’s only going to cost 500SC under the new system, which means that on a Double SC sale going Silver will cost you $2.50.

Silver is very definitely good enough to play the whole game short of Raiding and the Velious content absolutely for free. Velious will mean you need to buy some gear unlocks, although that in itself is a lot cheaper than a monthly sub.

As far as the extra character thing goers, you don’t have to delete any. Definitely don’t do that! Last thing before your SA account expires, just log in the characters you want to go on playing – all of them up to whatever the maximum number you’ll be allowed will be.

It sorts the characters that you are allowed to play by date last logged in. Those characters will be at the top of the list and open to play when you log in after your sub expires. The rest will still be there but locked and unavailable. You can regain them at any time by resubbing or (I think…) by buying more character slots.

@Bhagpuss – I have heard the character sort thing multiple times and have no reason to doubt that it works that way most of the time. But the one time I tried it, I found my character sorted in the reverse order of when I logged them in. The characters I wanted to play were at the bottom, locked out even though I logged them in last. No doubt some bug triggered by the length of my last name (which has broken things in the past… a lot of devs seem to live in a world where 12 letters is the longest last name allowed, though some hold the line at 8 letters) or some other oddity.

Now, I already bought silver for EverQuest II Extended… does that count, or do I need to buy it again for EverQuest II Live? Hah!

Anyway, I have a pile of Station Cash left over from the last big sale. I just don’t want to waste it on level 14 characters I haven’t played in five years that I only rolled up to play with somebody on another server that doesn’t actually play EQ2 any more. Easy delete.
