But Now I am Six, I’m as Clever as Clever

When I was One, I had just begun.
When I was Two, I was nearly new.
When I was Three, I was hardly me.
When I was Four, I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I’m as clever as clever,
So I think I’ll be six now for ever and ever.

From Now We are Six, by A. A. Milne

Back to our regularly planned post.

Here we are again, another anniversary.  It has been six years and I am still here.

Needs a haircut, just like me

As I do every year, I am going to try to summarize the story so far in terms of statistics and other such nonsense, all while attempting to overlay a completely inappropriate theme over the whole thing.  Cue Christopher Robin.

For those who want to read the past efforts, here they are.

As the years have gone along, these posts have become longer and sillier.  But I have tried to keep some consistency year over year for comparison.  Each year the same base stats get updated, while I try to add some new aspect into the mix.

This is long and boring for those who are not interested in the site for the sake of the site, so it is mostly hidden after the cut.

And Then The World Reached Into Our Game…

Statement by Secretary Clinton on the Attack in Benghazi

Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
September 11, 2012

I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission in Benghazi today.  As we work to secure our personnel and facilities, we have confirmed that one of our State Department officers was killed.  We are heartbroken by this terrible loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who have suffered in this attack.

This evening, I called Libyan President Magariaf to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya.  President Magariaf expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government’s full cooperation.

Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet.  The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others.  Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation.  But let me be clear:  There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.

In light of the events of today, the United States government is working with partner countries around the world to protect our personnel, our missions, and American citizens worldwide.

It started as a nervous sort of thing…

Then there was a news report that an American official had been killed, and three others were wounded, at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Finally, this came over Jabber.

My people, I have grievous news. Vile Rat has been confirmed to be KIA in Benghazi; his family has been informed and the news is likely to break out on the wire services soon. Needless to say, we are in shock, have no words, and have nothing but sympathy for his family and children. I have known Vile Rat since 2006, he was one of the oldest of old-guard goons and one of the best and most effective diplomats this game has ever seen.

His family are in our thoughts and prayers.

The original goon broadcast was by the_mittani to all-all

Vile Rat was a long time and well known EVE player, even serving a term on the CSM.

He was just a voice on Mumble to me, one I recognized, but not somebody I knew personally.  He was another player in our virtual world.  People on voice coms, where I went as soon as the news came out, were shocked by the news.  He was roundly remembered as a good person both in game and out.

He left behind a wife and two children in the real world, and I cannot imagine the pain they now feel.

He has been remembered here by those who knew him.

Addendum: As noted in the comments below, the US Department of State has publicly confirmed that Sean Smith, Vile Rat, was among those killed in Libya.

Meanwhile, many stations in game have been renamed to remember him.  Among the memorials is a video.  As a member of the CFC diplomatic services, he touched a lot of people in game.
