Support Your Local Indie MMO

Eric of Elder Game has a Kickstarter up for his game Project: Gorgon.

I felt like I needed a picture here

The game is summarized as:

Project: Gorgon – An Indie MMO by Industry Veterans

Project: Gorgon is a 3D fantasy MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) for PC & Mac with a quirky, old-school feel. It is designed for players who want to explore a deep world with complex game systems and a tight-knit community that is friendly enough to actually chat while they group. Think Asheron’s Call crossed with EverQuest crossed with NetHack.

There is a much more detailed description on the Kickstarter page, including links to videos and a detailed discussion of what the project entails, where it stands, and where it hopes to end up.

As Zubon pointed out,  the Elder Game blog has been full of great tales of game design issues along with other items like how the hell the project is going to make money, as the project has progressed.

However, now Project: Gorgon needs art and audio assets.  And to fund that, they have turned to Kickstarter.

There are, of course, risks.  Kickstarter now requires funding projects to include a summary of what might go wrong and how your donations might be pissed away for no return.  Of course, like those disclaimers in investment prospectuses, that doesn’t really help much if your donation does get pissed away for no return.

Still, Kickstarter is the go-to option for small projects like this, and if this is the sort of game you want to see made, you should at least read the info about it and consider donating.

Addendum: The Kickstarter did not get funded, but development has carried on.  You can see the latest updates at the Project: Gorgon web site.

I think this is going to be the first Kickstarter project where I actually put my hand in my pocket, so to speak. The whole thing looks good but this sold me:

“if you have items you don’t want, you can toss them on the ground – maybe somebody else will want them. If you sell something to a vendor, those items are available for other players to buy.”

Those are quite literally the two things I miss most from old school MMOs!

@Bhagpuss – Heh, I had to read your comment twice. In my world, “putting your hands in your pocket” tends to mean hiding them as a way of avoiding doing something.

So when you wrote that you were putting your hand in your pocket, my mind went to “will not support.” I had to read it again to get that you were reaching in there to fish out some money to donate.

Yes, I have to admit that the loot thing had some influence. I wrote about that in the past.

Heh! I thought about that when I wrote it – the phrase can mean both things here as well. I nearly put “get my wallet out” instead.

Only reason I haven’t already pledged is that I haven’t opened a Kickstarter account before and I want to take time to read through the legalese, time that I am currently using to play GW2 (from which I am tabbed out while I zone as I type this…)

Thanks for the reminder – I’d forgotten there was going to be a kickstarter for Project: Gorgon. Off to donate!

@Larofeticus – don’t worry, I’m sure someone else will be along soon with a Kickstarter for an indie free-for-all PvP sandbox MMO. Whether it will be someone with half the industry experience and a cat in hell’s chance of actually delivering is another matter.

@Larofeticus – Well, the nature of small projects is that you have to pick you audience and stick to that. Adding PvP would likely just make PvE worse, by giving it less attention, while probably not adding PvP that people would really like.

I actually linked to another Kickstarter previously for an indie MMO with PvP, but it did not make it, falling about $19K short of its $20K goal.

Ah, well, there is always Darkfall: Unholy Wars.
