Travel Advisory – Conflict in Amarr

No Burn Jita this year.  Instead the Party is in Amarr.  We will overthrow the irredeemably tainted Empress Jamyl Sarum by interdicting her capital and all that.  Hail the True Emperor of Amarr, Maximilian Singularity VI!  (Blame The Nosy Gamer.)

The Legend Returns

After a short duration joke claiming that it had been cancelled, things picked up at the end of downtime this morning.

This year I decided to sit in and see how it was done.  I managed to get on and into the fleet just in time to be part of a 6 billion ISK jump freighter gank.

Pretty amazing to see a mass of Catalysts undocking and warping off for a kill.

The only downside so far, which I gather from coms, is that Amarr just doesn’t have as much traffic as Jita, so targets are harder to come by.

Congrats. Perhaps you can drive another 100 subscribers from the game by the time the weekend is over.

@Dinsdale – At this point, suicide ganking is such a part of the game thinking that it will drive people away is silly. I wrote here about being suicide ganked almost exactly seven years ago and somehow I pulled through and survived.

Yes, you “survived” suicide ganking 7 years ago, and apparently flourished. But contrary to what you might believe, or your cohorts, hammering new / unknowing players ( a minority of players, especially the new vulnerable ones, actually follow blogs or forums ) will reduce the sub base. And no, saying “good riddance” to these paying customers is kind of bad, really bad, for Eve in general. But you keep on killing high sec players. Maybe you are right, and the PCU won’t keep dropping below 2008 levels.

If CCP wanted to make a perfectly safe space environment for the potential audience that might be attracted by it, couldn’t they simply make combat impossible in certain areas? Instead of, as it appears they do, applying an automated, draconian reprisal in “high security” areas?

If something is not banned it is, presumably, allowed, even if it isn’t encouraged. Although from reading this and other blogs it appears that previous Burn Jita events *were* officially encouraged at least to the point of promotion.

I dunno. I don’t play the game. I just read about it.

Honestly, it feels more like a smouldering than a burn. There seemed to be only one decent FC: Warr akini, and when he left, the tempo of ganks, such as it was, really died down.

@ dinsdale. EvE is not a themepark mmo and mistakes have consequences. For most people this is a positive thing and not negative. The tone of your comments sounds a little butthurt, show us on the doll where the goons touched you.

@Dinsdale – No, just no. Somebody flying a jump freighter, that is not some new player that will be scared off by a first death. That is somebody who is already flying in harm’s way. You try to frame this as though we’re ganking newbie ships on their first mission. It just isn’t so.

In fact, there is a public channel new players can join if they want to get added to the fleet, be handed a ship, and join in. The Burn Amarr tech I fit has pretty low skill requirements.

Anyway, the end result, as it has been for years, is that EVE Online just isn’t the game that YOU want to play. Suicide ganking saw its rise long before the highest PCU numbers. Hulkageddon and Burn Jita both came about well before subscriptions peaked. The biggest danger to the game isn’t “oh no, something bad might happen!” it is “hrmm, nothing is happening at all.”

By the way, I will say that there is now a thriving market it kill rights going on in Amarr. Those who got ganked are able to sell the 30 day right to shoot the gankers to make back some of their losses. That sounds small, but when you have 50-150 pilots on your kill mail, that can make a bit of coin.

@Bhagpuss – The attitude of CCP has been that this sort of player organized orgy of violence is exactly what they hoped would happen. Far from being banned, it is pretty much officially encouraged.

@Anonymous – I let coms run for quite a while just to listen and the biggest complaint has been that Amarr just isn’t as packed with valuable targets as Jita. They have been jumping two or three systems out to catch a single freighter. And by Gevlon’s theory, Burn Amarr has actually resulted in less ganks in the area than a normal weekend.

Yeah, Piranha, everyone knows the players who are flying freighters and jump freighters are all clueless noobs. Sure.
