Honest Trailers – Star Trek: The Next Generation

Somehow I missed the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation last month.  But Honest Trailers was on the job.

I remain on the Kirk side of the debate.

    Not a single mention of Guinan at all? I know they had a lot to get through with 178 episodes, but considering she appeared in 29 of them and was played by Whoopie Goldberg it seems like she at least rates a shoutout. Maybe they had IP concerns?

    That made it look a lot better than I remember. I saw quite a few episodes when it was on tv (although I can’t imagine why, thinking back – it must have been after something I liked and I just left it on, I guess…) and my only real memory of it is how excruciatingly slow and boring it was. At least the original, bad as it was, zipped along.

    I don’t agree with Bhagpuss completely on it being a bad show; I generally enjoyed it. I Didn’t get to see the first season while I was stationed in England and cable came out…but upon coming back to the states I caught all of the episodes there-after and watched the missed first season, then continued watching both voyager and deep space nine. I actually owned the star trek the next generation series on VHS….which I think is in a storage unit that hasn’t seen the light of day in some 25 years.

    My favorite however was Deep Space Nine; but it was the connectivity of the series in that it felt like one big galaxy; that it made it(All three series) truly awesome and a must see. I always had a hard time with the star wars or star trek question…with the addition of the star wars cartoon series I’m more of a half and half kinda guy I guess.

    That being said however; loving it back in the day is not the same as trying to sit through the episodes now …its a bit of a hard slog. Although it still have some really good episodes throughout its the later year episodes that are worth watching.

    Even back in the day I found the first season of TNG rough to watch. As I recall part of that season was made from left-over, rejected and re-worked TOS scripts. After that I watched a lot of it, though I am sure that was, in part, because my group at work was very into it, so being part of the group meant watching. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but I was probably more into it because of that. I liked a lot of DS9, though the “stuck on the station” aspect of it meant inventing reasons to go places over and over. I wanted to like Voyager, but couldn’t stick with it and never really watched Enterprise.

    I did start watching Discovery… well, I watched the first episode. I would probably continue watching it, but not at the cost of subscribing to yet another service. It isn’t that good. So I’m stuck watching Orville, hoping it will get off the fence and either be funny or serious, because it is trying too hard to be both, and succeeding at neither, in my opinion.

    Discovery, has me quite mad about the way the decided to change the Klingons…with the excuse that the Klingons cannon was flexible as it had been changed before. As most of us know even in enterprise Klingons looked like Klingons…it was only the original series that was made in the 60s that it was different. I still watch it however…

    The Orville is awesome. I watch it and I see Star Fleet meets real life workplaces. I can just see the real military at work on that bridge crew. In the Army and Air Force you will see that sort of banter back and forth.
