Get Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr By Subscribing to Pokemon Bank

Nintendo has an offer up that will allow you to get the fully evolved versions of the starter Pokemon from Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, each with a bonus special ability.  All you have to do is be up-to-date with Pokemon Bank.

Nintendo giving people special Pokemon… even starter Pokemon from past games… isn’t a new thing.  They have been doing it since the most primitive networking days of the GameBoy.  I wrote about a download even for the Pokemon Black & White starter Pokemon just about a month back.  (That event is still active, so don’t miss your chance.)

What makes this event ever so slightly different is that rather than being just a promotion for the installed base, it is really a subscriber bonus that is showing up at just about the time people will need to resubscribe.

Subscriptions?  Resubscribe?  In Pokemon?

Well, yes… at least with Pokemon Bank.

Pokemon Bank is an online service for the Pokemon franchise.  It was put in place to allow users to move Pokemon between versions of the game without having to have two Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS hardware units (OMG, solo play wins out over social again!) and to give players a place to store Pokemon beyond the limits of any particular game.

All you had to do was get your Pokemon into Pokemon Black & White or Pokemon Black Version 2 & White Version 2 via the old fashioned method in place since Pokemon Diamond & Pearl.

From that point you could then use the special Pokemon Transporter application on your Nintendo 3DS to send your Pokemon on a one way trip out of the DS/DSi generations of the series and into the 3DS generation and Pokemon Bank.

Pokemon Bank - $5.00 a year

Pokemon Bank Process

Once in Pokemon Bank any 3DS generation version of Pokemon could withdraw or deposit your Pokemon.  I wrote about running Pokemon through the process back in September, if you want more detail on it.

The thing of it is that, in order to fund this service and keep it a viable, ongoing proposition for Nintendo, they charge a yearly subscription fee for it.  For the princely sum of $5.00 you get a year’s worth of access to Pokemon Bank.

And, as I mentioned a little ways up the post, Pokemon Bank has been out for a little more than a year now, so that first year’s subscription has started running out for the early adopters.  Faced with this, Nintendo could either send out nagging reminders asking people to re-up for another year of Pokemon Bank or, I suppose, they could just put out a special offer only available to those who have active Pokemon Bank accounts.

Well played Nintendo, well played.

All you have to do is log into Pokemon Bank between February 27, 2015 and November 30, 2015, at which point you will then be able to download the special Pokemon.  Details about the even are available here.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is tentatively glancing in the direction of smart devices like iPads and such, while still vocally sticking to its long tradition of control over both software and hardware.

All Set for Pokemon Black and White

It is almost here.

Pokemon Black and White editions are set to be released in the US on March 6th, which is just a week away.

And we are all ready in our household.

We have completed Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Well, I have completed SoulSilver.  My daughter is a couple of steps shy.

I have defeated all of Team Rocket, become the undisputed regional champion, and captured all of the legendary Pokemon in the game.

I have also unlocked all of the Pokewalker routes, because I wear my Pokewalker every single day… and I make it a point to leave my desk and actually go for a walk at least once a day.

Pokewalker on my Belt

Yes, I cheated a little bit.  But that did not last.  So most of my Pokewalker steps are legitimate.

And, of course, thanks to some serious OCD, I completed the National Pokedex… including the extras.

After that, we turned our eyes to Pokemon Black and White pre-launch events.

We have been to GameStop on three occasions to download the three shiny legendary Pokemon.

Raikou, Entei, and Suicune

They unlock a special encounter with Zoroark when transferred into Black or White.

We have been to the Pokemon Black and White Tour to see previews, get prizes, and of course, to download another special Pokemon.

Mythical Celebi

Without this special Celebi transferred into the game, you won’t be able to encounter Zorua in Pokemon Black and White.

Plush Zorua and Pikachu

Are you starting to see a pattern here?  To complete the next game you have to have done the last game and you have to have downloaded Pokemon from special events along the way.

Oh, and you have to have two Nintendo DS units handy to transfer these Pokemon to the new game.

Still, it does get you out and at least standing next to some other Pokemon fans as we all stand around GameStop and download. (Unless, like us, you get a parking spot close enough to the store that you can sit in your car and do the download.)

Okay, so at least it gets us out of the house.

We also went to Toys R Us to download Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu.

Go Pikachu!

Pikachu doesn’t actually unlock anything in Black and White, and it isn’t like you can’t catch all the wild Pikachu you want in game, but this one is special and he’s just cool to have.

We haven’t gone completely overboard.  We won’t be, for example, ordering the special edition Pokemon Black and White themed Nintendo DSi sets.

I like Pokemon... but maybe not that much

Now it is just the wait for the launch.  March 6th is the date, though we will have to wait a little bit beyond that.  Next week is my birthday and I can’t go out and buy new stuff for myself.

But the delay should be short.

My daughter has already “called” Black, so I will be playing White.

And does it seem odd to anybody else that the legendary Pokemon with Black and White are the opposite color respectively?

Download Mythical Celebi at GameStop

Nintendo is running their Pokemon Black and White Tour currently, and one of the attractions is the ability to download a special Pokemon to your copy of Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver, the Mythical Celebi… who I guess isn’t all that much of a myth if you can just download it.

Mythical Celebi

However, the Pokemon Black & White Tour is only visiting a few cities over the next few weeks.  So that Pokemon fans not near those locations won’t miss out on everything, Pokemon.com has announced that from February 21st through March 6th of this year, GameStop will be hosting the same Celebi download event that is accompanying the tour at all of their US locations.

Download Celebi – Meet Zorua

Downloading Celebi and transferring it to Pokemon Black & White will allow you to meet (and capture) the Pokemon Zorua.  That Pokemon is otherwise unavailable in the game.

This is an in-store only event.  You must got to a US GameStop store during the dates listed to be able to download these Pokemon.

However, since it is an in-store event, you will be able to download these Pokemon to Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver.

As usual, all of the details are available at Pokemon.com.

The Last Weekend for the Shiny Pokemon Download at GameStop

The last of the shiny Pokemon download events, part of the build up to Pokemon Black and White, ends this weekend at GameStop.

The final shiny Pokemon, Suicune, is available to download through this coming Sunday, February 6th.

You appear to need all three shiny Pokemon for Pokemon Black and White.  When you transfer them to Pokemon Black or White you will unlock the ability to catch the new Pokemon Zoroark.  Zoroark will otherwise not be obtainable in the game.

And, while you are out on your download mission, you might as well stop by your local Toys R Us to download Ash’s Pikachu.  The download event for Ash’s Pikachu runs until February 13th.

Go Pikachu!

That will then be followed in some areas by the Pokemon tour.

And then, finally, Pokemon Black and White will ship on March 6th, at which point we can actually sit down and play the game!

Download Ash’s Pikachu at Toys R Us

Nintendo is really cranking up the download events for the launch of Pokemon Black and White.

First they announced the GameStop shiny Pokemon download event(s).

Then they announced the Pokemon Black and White Tour, which includes a download of its own.

And now Pokemon.com has announced that from January 30th to February 13th they are bringing in Toys R Us for… a Pikachu download event?  Really?

I am famous, everybody loves me!

I mean, yes, Pikachu is the head honcho, the top of the Pokemon Pyramid of Fame, he even has his own page on Wikipedia unlike most of his 392 fellow monsters, and his own balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but after that Yellow Forest Pokewalker route, does anybody not have enough Pikachu yet?

OMG Pikachu!

The place was nothing but Pikachu.  You had to catch dozens of ordinary Pikachu to get the mildly special Pikachu. I knew people who were very sick of Pikachu after that.

To be fair, this download event is for a Pikachu that has all the same abilities that Ash Ketchum‘s Pikachu has in the long-running Pokemon Anime TV series.  This includes, according to the promo page, Volt Tackle, Thunderbolt, and Iron Tail.  I’m not sure why they wouldn’t mention the fourth ability, since Pokemon can only have four abilities, and I am going to guess that regular viewers of the TV series could probably name it, so why hide it?

To create some minor mystery I guess.

And Pikachu also comes holding the Light Ball, which doubles up his attack stat and makes him 19% more adorable.

This event works with all of the DS native main-line Pokemon games, so you can download to Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

Since we’re big on Pokemon at our house, I am sure we’ll be at Toys R Us downloading this extra special Pikachu to all of our copies of Pokemon.

Details on the event and how to download Ash’s Pikachu are available here.

Entei Download This Week at GameStop

I almost forgot that this week is the second of the three Shiny Pokemon download events at GameStop.

This week, through this coming Sunday the 23rd, the Pokemon to be downloaded is Entei.

Shiny Entei

You need these Pokemon for Pokemon Black and White.  When you transfer them to Pokemon Black or White you will unlock the ability to catch the new Pokemon Zoroark.  Zoroark will otherwise not be obtainable in the game.

It sounds like you will need all three for the unlock, so head to GameStop before this coming Monday for the download.

The final download event will follow in two week.

  • Suicune – January 31st through February 6th

That fill then be followed in some areas by the Pokemon tour.

And then, finally, Pokemon Black and White will ship on March 6th.

Pokemon is Coming to a Mall Near… Me!

And maybe to one near you too.

As part of the warm up for the impending release of Pokemon Black and White, Nintendo has a Pokemon tour scheduled to hit various malls throughout the United States to promote the game.

Attractions of the tour include:

  • Meet never-before-seen Pokémon while playing demos of the new Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version video games
  • Watch special screenings of the new Pokémon movie, Pokémon—Zoroark: Master of Illusions. This is your only chance to watch the movie in theaters, and best of all, it’s free!
  • Enjoy a fun hunt around the mall collecting stamps to discover new Pokémon and win cool prizes!
  • Meet some of the new Pokémon characters as well as plenty of other photo opportunities…so remember to bring your camera!
  • Bring your Nintendo DS system and copy of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver Version game to get the Pokémon Celebi via special distribution!

And, luck us, a mall in our area is on the list.

So, no matter how little I enjoy visiting the mall, my daughter and I will no doubt be headed out to see the Pokemon Black and White tour.  The Celebi download alone would get us there.  We’ll probably end up with six or so.  A chance to see the new game is also a big plus, though I’m pretty sure we’ll be buying it no matter what.  I’m not sure we’ll stay for the movie… I must admit I’m not a big fan of Pokemon in video form, but we’ll see.

I’ll be sure to bring my camera.

Further details are available at either of the two Nintendo sites (here or here) announcing the event.
