Pokemon Global Link Has Launched!

Pokemon.com has announced earlier this week that the Pokemon Global Link would launch on April 13th.

Previously delayed by the tragic earthquake in Japan, the new Pokemon Global Link is now live and accessible.

The Pokemon Global Link has two key pieces.  The first is the Pokemon Dream World.

The Dream World is an online play area and is analogous to the Pokewalker environment that was part of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Once you have followed the instructions on creating an account, you can connect to the Global Link, put one of your Pokemon to sleep (no, not that kind of put to sleep), and they will be transferred to the Dream World, which is accessed via your computer web browser.

My Herdier in the Dream World

In the Dream World you get an island to play on and a house to decorate.  You can link your island to the islands of your friends so you can visit each other.  There are things you can do to earn or grow berries, the Dream World currency,  to buy things to decorate your house.

And the catalog of decor seems pretty substantial already.

Bigger than the Sears Catalog

You can also transfer things back to Pokemon Black and White, so I am sure there will be some items that will be exclusive to the Dream World.  This is where you go to bring back the Pokemon you may have won playing BreakOut.

My daughter, once she gets her homework done, is eager to explore the Dream World.

The other, and probably more popular aspect of Pokemon Global Link is Global Battle Union.

This is Pokemon battle central.  You can battle your friends or take on random opponents.  You can track your battle statistics.  There are world-wide rankings to be achieved and regular Pokemon League seasons, akin to what goes on in the Pokemon Trading Card Game competitive world. (The TCG actually has its own online aspect now as well.)

This will be the place to be linked if you want to hone your battle skills for the upcoming Pokemon Video Game Championship Series.

All of this, of course, requires you have access to a wireless internet connection and that your Nintendo DS is configured correctly to connect to the internet via that wireless access point.  See the instruction booklet that came with your game for directions on connecting to the internet.

Pokemon Secret Egg Event Coming to Toys R Us

Pokemon.com has announced a new download event to be held at Toys R Us from April 27th through May 31st.

The event coincides with the airing of an episode of the Pokemon animated series where Ash is given a special Pokemon egg to care for until it hatches.

You too can download the same egg at Toys R Us and hatch it in your copy of Pokemon Black or White.

From the site:

Get a Secret Egg, pick up special Pokémon TCG packs, and discover new Pokémon at a special Toys“R”Us event beginning April 27th!

Coming up in the Pokémon: Black & White animated TV series, Ash is given a great responsibility—he must care for a delicate Pokémon Egg until it hatches. Watch episodes every Saturday through May 21st on Cartoon Network to find out which Pokémon will hatch!

You can follow in Ash’s footsteps with your own Pokémon Egg! Visit participating Toys”R”Us stores from April 27th to May 31st to receive a Secret Egg distribution for your Pokémon Black Version or Pokémon White Version game. Carry the Secret Egg with you in your game until it hatches to find out which one of three secret Pokémon you’ll get!

While at Toys”R”Us, look for a special Pokémon Trading Card Game offer: you can purchase Pokémon TCG: Black & White booster two-packs that include a secret promo card featuring one of the three Pokémon that may hatch from your Secret Egg!

Head to Toys”R”Us starting April 27th with your Nintendo DS™ system and a copy of your game for the Secret Egg distribution, and check out all the other amazing Pokémon products, including special packs of Pokémon TCG cards!

This download is only for Pokemon Black and White.  I suspect that the Pokemon that comes from the egg won’t be available through any other means, but I suppose we’ll only know once it hatches.

[Addendum: The “How To” details are now posted over at the Pokemon Black and White site.]

Play Breakout, Win Pokemon on Global Link

Well, you can win ONE Pokemon.  But it is a special one.

Plus it is an annoying one to get otherwise, and all you have to do clear four levels of Breakout to do it.

While Pokemon Black and White launched earlier this month, one of the add-on services to the game, the Pokemon Global Link, is not yet live.

The Pokemon Global Link is the key online component of Pokemon Black and White that includes features like the Dream World, where you can interact with other players, the tracking service where you can see how your friends are doing in the game, the Global Battle Union, and other features.  You can read all about it here.

However, it is not live yet.

It is supposed to go live this Wednesday, March 30th.   However the earthquake in Japan has pushed that date back.

The Current Global Link Web Page

Other aspects of the launch are still going on it seems.

To use access all of the features of the Global Link when it goes live, you will need to create an account at the Pokemon Trainer’s Club.

The Pokemon Trainer’s Club has been around for a while now.  It is an online social site with an obvious Pokemon theme.  You can dress up your avatar and play flash games.

And they have just added a new flash game.  It is, as the title of this post indicates, a version of Breakout.  If you clear all four levels of the game, you get the option to take a Pokemon that is offered you.  If you do not like the Pokemon, you can say no and try for another.

Let's Play Pokemon Breakout

The Pokemon on offer are all evolutions of the Pokemon Eevee, some of which are quite a challenge to get.

If you win and select a Pokemon, that is the only one you will be able to take.  But once the Pokemon Global Link goes live and you log in, you will be able to bring that Pokemon with you back into your copy of Black or White, if I read things right.

So far I have been offered the Jolteon evolution of Eevee, but I am holding out for a Glaceon.

How to Catch Zorua and Zoroark

*[Zoroark download event from September 18th through the 25th]*

Pokemon Black and White have been out for a while now.

Those of us who did all the pre-launch downloads and went and saw the Pokemon Black and White Tour, we all have the game and are playing away.

My daughter is mocking me now because I am only at the fourth gym leader.

And the game is good.  I will have to find some time to compare it to HeartGold and SoulSilver, but I am enjoying it and despite the usual discomfort at having to learn about 150 new Pokemon, my daughter and I are having fun catching them.  They are growing on us.

But those download events, the three shiny legendaries along with mythical Celebi, they were set up for a reason.  We would have downloaded them anyway, but they also unlock special Pokemon in Black and White.

And Pokemon.com has finally posted how to get the two Pokemon that get unlocked, Zorua and Zoroark.

Getting Zorua does not seem to be a big deal.

According to the update, which you can read here, unlocking Zorua is pretty easy.

There is a special, secret way to transfer Celebi to your game.  You will need two Nintendo DS systems to do it.  But once you have Celebi in the game and in your party, talking to the right person in the game will allow Zorua to join your team as long as there is an open spot.

There is no messy catching situation, Zorua is just yours.

Which is completely unlike the scene with Zoroark.

Obtaining Zoroark is going to be a bit more work.  You can read all the detail on that encounter here.

As with Zorua, there is a special way to unlock the ability to transfer over the legendary Pokemon you downloaded during the GameStop events earlier this year.  Again, you will need two Nintendo DS units to do the transfer.

But once you activate Zoroark, you have only one chance to catch him.  If he gets away, the opportunity is gone.

So you might want to wait until you have built up a good supply of high success Pokeballs and have a team together that is able to wear him down so you can catch him.  And you might want to save just before you do the encounter, so you can turn off your DS if you fail and try again.

First Pokemon Black and White Download Event – Victini

Pokemon Black and White has only been out for a few days and there is already a download even for the game.

Actually, the download event was announced BEFORE Black and White came out and information about the event is in the box with the game.

From March 6th through April 10th you will be able to download a special item via Nintendo WiFi that will unlock an encounter with the Pokemon Victini.

Get Victini!

This is the only way to unlock the encounter to let you capture this new Pokemon.

Given how far in advance Nintendo started announcing this download event (the picture above is from an email I received on February 3rd), this was obviously part of the campaign to get people to buy Pokemon Black and White as close to launch day as possible.

But Pokemon is not an MMORPG but a console game, and the success or failure of a console game is often determined by those first day, first week, first month sales.  There is no ongoing subscription revenue stream.  They have to sell boxes.  And in something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more you sell early on, the more you tend to sell over all.  So day one sales matter to them.  A lot.

GameFreak, which is the developer who actually makes the Pokemon games, has been on a pace to release a new… or revamped… Pokemon game every year in a very predictable pattern.  (Next spring there should be a roll-up version of Pokemon Black and White.  What will they call it? Pokemon Gray?)

Anyway, last year’s game no longer matters.  While both Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver each made the top 10 list of console games sold last year (combined they were in 3rd place by one report I read) that is all last year’s news.  Now they have to sell the new game.

And so we have this promotion.  Buy the game NOW or you won’t have access to one of the new Pokemon!  The console market drives the developer’s behavior which, in turn leads them to try to incent us to behave in the way that is optimum for them.

Fortunately for them… and for me I suppose… I am on board with their plan.

As for the actual download, remember that this is NOT an in-store event.

To download the Liberty Pass which will open up the Victini encounter you must access Nintendo Wifi via a wireless connection to the internet.  How to connect to Nintendo Wifi is covered in the game instruction booklet.

Full details on the event are available at the Pokemon Black and White web site.

Remember, you have only until April 10th to get this download.

(And does Victini sound like a special cocktail from Trader Vic’s to anybody else?)

Black and White Birthday

My wife actually went out on Sunday and got me an early birthday present, a copy of Pokemon White for me… plus a copy of Pokemon Black for my daughter.

So I was able to play Pokemon on launch day.

But when I got home from work last night, I have the Black and White birthday surprise.

Black and White all over

In addition to my early present, there was the Pokemon Black and White guide book (special hard bound collector’s edition), special collector’s edition, some special Pokemon Black and White items they were giving away if you bought the game on launch day, a black and a white Wii Remote (with the built-in Wii motion sensor update), a box of See’s candy in black and white wrapping, some licorice buttons, German chocolate cake, Pocky, and some batteries just in case. (Energizers, which are black and silver.)

Which is a lot of black and white stuff.

Of course, that attracted a big ball of black and white fuzz.

Fred investigates

Fred, the biggest of our three black and white cats (we have a theme going here) had to get in on the act.

Candy!

I didn’t let him start knocking things off the counter.  He has a habit of doing that.

Anyway, quite the birthday surprise.  Maybe better than a motorcycle.

Pokemon Black and White Launch Today

Yes, if you live in Europe you have been able to buy the games since Friday, and if you were near New York City yesterday, you could have gotten a copy a day early at the Nintendo World Store.  I’m sure that launch event wasn’t at all crowded.

Pokemon Black and White

(Those are the European boxes with the PEGI rating on them. In the US the ESRB rating is E for Everyone.)

But for the rest of us here in the states, today is the day.  Pokemon Black and White are finally available.

This new version of the game, the second generation of the wildly popular Pokemon RPGs on the Nintendo DS platform and the fifth generation overall (generations calculated officially by the Pokemon available, if it were done by jumps in game features and technology we would be at least seven generations into the series) introduces a whole selection of online and connectivity options.

All listed under the banner of the Pokemon Global Link.

These include the the Pokemon Dream World, which appears to be a web based attachment that lets you play additional games, find items you can bring back to the base game, and create and decorate your own house.  The description is fairly vague in my opinion.  It might be fun, or it might be something you do just because there are some key items you need for the game.

There is also a way to track the progress your friends are making in the game and to send them email.

Downloadable content figures in somehow, which includes skins for your in-game Pokedex.

And then, probably most important to the hard core fans of the game, there is a world-wide online battle match-up and ranking system, so you can find a trainer battle whenever you want.  This appears to cover most of the online functionality of Pokemon Battle Revolution, the Wii add on game for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

And as much as I want to dig in and start playing, I have to wait a bit.  My birthday is coming up shortly and I cannot run out and buy one of the things I really want right before that.  I have to leave my family something.

Plus I will get to avoid that very controversial moment at the store.

So there will be some delay.

All Set for Pokemon Black and White

It is almost here.

Pokemon Black and White editions are set to be released in the US on March 6th, which is just a week away.

And we are all ready in our household.

We have completed Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Well, I have completed SoulSilver.  My daughter is a couple of steps shy.

I have defeated all of Team Rocket, become the undisputed regional champion, and captured all of the legendary Pokemon in the game.

I have also unlocked all of the Pokewalker routes, because I wear my Pokewalker every single day… and I make it a point to leave my desk and actually go for a walk at least once a day.

Pokewalker on my Belt

Yes, I cheated a little bit.  But that did not last.  So most of my Pokewalker steps are legitimate.

And, of course, thanks to some serious OCD, I completed the National Pokedex… including the extras.

After that, we turned our eyes to Pokemon Black and White pre-launch events.

We have been to GameStop on three occasions to download the three shiny legendary Pokemon.

Raikou, Entei, and Suicune

They unlock a special encounter with Zoroark when transferred into Black or White.

We have been to the Pokemon Black and White Tour to see previews, get prizes, and of course, to download another special Pokemon.

Mythical Celebi

Without this special Celebi transferred into the game, you won’t be able to encounter Zorua in Pokemon Black and White.

Plush Zorua and Pikachu

Are you starting to see a pattern here?  To complete the next game you have to have done the last game and you have to have downloaded Pokemon from special events along the way.

Oh, and you have to have two Nintendo DS units handy to transfer these Pokemon to the new game.

Still, it does get you out and at least standing next to some other Pokemon fans as we all stand around GameStop and download. (Unless, like us, you get a parking spot close enough to the store that you can sit in your car and do the download.)

Okay, so at least it gets us out of the house.

We also went to Toys R Us to download Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu.

Go Pikachu!

Pikachu doesn’t actually unlock anything in Black and White, and it isn’t like you can’t catch all the wild Pikachu you want in game, but this one is special and he’s just cool to have.

We haven’t gone completely overboard.  We won’t be, for example, ordering the special edition Pokemon Black and White themed Nintendo DSi sets.

I like Pokemon... but maybe not that much

Now it is just the wait for the launch.  March 6th is the date, though we will have to wait a little bit beyond that.  Next week is my birthday and I can’t go out and buy new stuff for myself.

But the delay should be short.

My daughter has already “called” Black, so I will be playing White.

And does it seem odd to anybody else that the legendary Pokemon with Black and White are the opposite color respectively?

Download Mythical Celebi at GameStop

Nintendo is running their Pokemon Black and White Tour currently, and one of the attractions is the ability to download a special Pokemon to your copy of Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver, the Mythical Celebi… who I guess isn’t all that much of a myth if you can just download it.

Mythical Celebi

However, the Pokemon Black & White Tour is only visiting a few cities over the next few weeks.  So that Pokemon fans not near those locations won’t miss out on everything, Pokemon.com has announced that from February 21st through March 6th of this year, GameStop will be hosting the same Celebi download event that is accompanying the tour at all of their US locations.

Download Celebi – Meet Zorua

Downloading Celebi and transferring it to Pokemon Black & White will allow you to meet (and capture) the Pokemon Zorua.  That Pokemon is otherwise unavailable in the game.

This is an in-store only event.  You must got to a US GameStop store during the dates listed to be able to download these Pokemon.

However, since it is an in-store event, you will be able to download these Pokemon to Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver.

As usual, all of the details are available at Pokemon.com.

Pokemon Black and White Tour – Hunting Pokemon at Oakridge Mall

As I posted previously, Nintendo has a Pokemon Black & White Tour headed out across the US to drum up awareness of the upcoming release of Pokemon Black & White.

14 malls across the US will be hosting this event between February 5th and March 20th.

This past weekend it was our turn here in Silicon Valley as Oakridge Mall in San Jose hosted the tour.

This lead to a discussion between my wife and I as to how a mall gets chosen for this sort of event, because Oakridge is not the biggest, fanciest, or most centrally located of the malls in Silicon Valley.  Certainly Vallco Mall seemed like a more likely choice to host such an event, it being uncluttered by actual retail establishments.  Our thought was that having a GameStop and a movie theater were minimum requirements.

For the event, there was a meta activity, a search for Pokemon stamps for your Pokemon Black & White brochure.

The Stamp Locations

Each of the stamp locations had a large marker sign above it, just in case you missed the swarm of people wearing Pokemon apparel and holding the aforementioned brochures.

Reshiram Sign

Zekrom Sign

Oshawatt Sign

Each of the stamp locations also had focus.  One of the rally points (Oshawatt) was out in front of GameStop, where you could also download a special event Celebi.

Download Celebi

We now have half a dozen Celebi across as may copies of Pokemon.

Another stamp location happened to be at the Pokemon sales kiosk setup in the mall, where you could buy all sorts of Pokemon goods.

Pokemon Sales Frenzy

They had shirts featuring the key new Pokemon featured in Black & White… and, of course, Pikachu.

Youth Sizes Only

We ended up with a Pikachu T-shirt and a plush Zorua and Pikachu.

Chubbiest Pikachu Ever!

One of the stamp locations was co-located with an information booth, though the only information they seemed to be giving was how to get free tickets to see the new Pokemon movie, Zoroark: Master of Illusions, which was being shown on the big screen at the mall theater.  It is otherwise a direct to video feature here in the US.

The next stamp location had a big walled off area where you could stand in line for a long stretch to actually play Pokemon Black & White for a little bit.  Being sold on the game already, we declined to stand in that line.

Then the final stamp location, where we actually started, is co-located with the prize booth where you collect your gift for collecting all five stamps.

Ready to spin the wheel

The line to spin the prize wheel was the longest we encountered.  When we walked into the mall at a little before 11am, it was only a few people deep, but the first wave of Pokemon fans was still out collecting stamps.  By the time we got back, the line was, if you know the mall, from Target to Cheesecake Factory, which probably put it at 100 people long.

We waited our time in line and my daughter spun the wheel and got Pokemon phone charm which, considering she had her hopes pinned on a plush Oshawatt, she was surprisingly satisfied with.

Your Prize

The line grew throughout the day.  We went off to have lunch (At Cheesecake Factory, which oddly enough, did not have its usual line) and by the time we were done the line had grown considerably.  They were laying down lanes with tape on the floor to direct people and to keep them from blocking the entry to stores.  All in all it was quite an event.

Giant Inflatable Pokemon

They were also showing episodes from the Pokemon TV series and there were Pokemon characters with whom you could have your picture taken (we did not get in line for that) and the mall was literally crawling with Pokemon fans.  We’re surprisingly easy to spot.

At lunch we sat next to table with three boys who had come down from San Francisco for the event.  They had Pokemon Diamond out and were running around in the underground, the Wi-fi zone in that version, so my daughter and I both grabbed our copies and ran around with them until their lunch showed up.  I hope Black & White have something similar, as something like the underground was one of the great omissions from HeartGold & SoulSilver.

Anyway, it was worth a Saturday morning to attend this event.

If the Pokemon Black & White Tour is coming to a mall near you, my only advice is to get there early.
