Mewtwo Available for Download from Nintendo

As mentioned previously, Mewtwo is now available for download from Nintendo via Nintendo WiFi, and will remain so through March 6, 2012.  I downloaded mine already.

The Mighty Mewtwo

While the event is really just to bring attention to updates to the Pokemon Trading Card Game, those of us who only play the video game benefit.

The full instructions for the event are available at Pokemon.com, along with this information:

You’ll have a new opportunity to get the Legendary Mewtwo once again! Between February 12th and March 6th, you can receive Mewtwo in your Pokémon Black Version or Pokémon White Version game. Don’t miss this limited-time distribution event to get this amazing Pokémon via the Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection service (wireless broadband Internet access required. For more info, go to support.nintendo.com).

When you take this Level 70 Mewtwo into battle, know that you have one of the strongest Pokémon ever. Its moves are powerful and well suited to take advantage of Mewtwo’s strengths and cover its weaknesses. Psystrike is a new signature move for Mewtwo that does damage depending on its opponent’s Defense. Ordinarily Mewtwo doesn’t learn Psystrike until Level 100, but this Mewtwo already has the powerful attack! Mewtwo also has Shadow Ball, a Ghost-type move that is super effective against the Ghost-type Pokémon that can cause problems for Psychic types. Mewtwo is also weak against Dark-type Pokémon, so its third attack, the Fighting-type move Aura Sphere, is a good counter to their attacks. Lastly, this special Mewtwo knows Electro Ball, a stunning Electric-type move that Mewtwo cannot normally learn!

When you get Mewtwo, it will be holding a King’s Rock, an item which occasionally makes its opponent flinch in battle. You can also give it to certain Pokémon and then trade them to make them evolve. Plus, Mewtwo comes with a Premier Ribbon, a special Ribbon that you can’t get through normal game play!

Mewtwo will be available via a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection distribution event that runs from February 12th through March 6th.

A reminded, this is not an in-store event, but a download available over your local wireless internet connection to Pokemon Black or White only.  For instructions on setting up that connection, go to the US Nintendo support site.

First Pokemon Black and White Download Event – Victini

Pokemon Black and White has only been out for a few days and there is already a download even for the game.

Actually, the download event was announced BEFORE Black and White came out and information about the event is in the box with the game.

From March 6th through April 10th you will be able to download a special item via Nintendo WiFi that will unlock an encounter with the Pokemon Victini.

Get Victini!

This is the only way to unlock the encounter to let you capture this new Pokemon.

Given how far in advance Nintendo started announcing this download event (the picture above is from an email I received on February 3rd), this was obviously part of the campaign to get people to buy Pokemon Black and White as close to launch day as possible.

But Pokemon is not an MMORPG but a console game, and the success or failure of a console game is often determined by those first day, first week, first month sales.  There is no ongoing subscription revenue stream.  They have to sell boxes.  And in something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more you sell early on, the more you tend to sell over all.  So day one sales matter to them.  A lot.

GameFreak, which is the developer who actually makes the Pokemon games, has been on a pace to release a new… or revamped… Pokemon game every year in a very predictable pattern.  (Next spring there should be a roll-up version of Pokemon Black and White.  What will they call it? Pokemon Gray?)

Anyway, last year’s game no longer matters.  While both Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver each made the top 10 list of console games sold last year (combined they were in 3rd place by one report I read) that is all last year’s news.  Now they have to sell the new game.

And so we have this promotion.  Buy the game NOW or you won’t have access to one of the new Pokemon!  The console market drives the developer’s behavior which, in turn leads them to try to incent us to behave in the way that is optimum for them.

Fortunately for them… and for me I suppose… I am on board with their plan.

As for the actual download, remember that this is NOT an in-store event.

To download the Liberty Pass which will open up the Victini encounter you must access Nintendo Wifi via a wireless connection to the internet.  How to connect to Nintendo Wifi is covered in the game instruction booklet.

Full details on the event are available at the Pokemon Black and White web site.

Remember, you have only until April 10th to get this download.

(And does Victini sound like a special cocktail from Trader Vic’s to anybody else?)

Pokewalker Winner’s Path WiFi Event

The Pokewalker Yellow Forest event ended yesterday, but in what may be a sign of things to come with Pokewalker routes, a new WiFi download was announced today.

Called the Winner’s Path, it features more pokemon that you may need to complete your national pokedex.

This download event runs from May 6, 2010 through to June 26th, 2010.  Nintendo has included a guide to the pokemon and items you can collect on this route and how many steps you need to take to have a chance of finding them.

Pokemon Rarity

Item Rarity

As with the Yellow Forest event, this is NOT an in-store event.  This route can only be obtained via Nintendo WiFi, which requires you to have WiFi access to a real internet connection.  Instructions on how to configure your DS for that sort of connectivity are in the instruction booklet which comes with Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. (Page 35 in the SoulSilver booklet.)

Once you have your WiFi access configured, full details on how to obtain the Winner’s Path route are available on the Nintendo Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver web site.

Pokewalker Yellow Forest WiFi Event

Pokemon.com has announced the first post-release WiFi event for Pokemon HeartGold and Soulsilver.

From April 1st through May 5th you can download a Pokewalker route called the Yellow Forest.

OMG Pikachu!

This new Pokewalker route features, as the name implies, Pikachu.  There are even some special variations of Pikachu you can catch when walking this route.

This is NOT an in-store event, this is only available through direct Nintendo WiFi, which means you have to have configured your DS to connect to the internet via WiFi.

Details on how to do that are in the manual that came with your game. (Page 35 in the SoulSilver manual.)

Once you have that setup, step by step download instructions are available at the Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver web site.

[Edit: This event is now over.  The next event has been announced.]
