Sean Murray was at it again earlier this week, posting emojis on social media as an indicator that an update was about to land. This time around it was an orange safety vest emoji… then three such emojis… which left people coming up with a range of theories.
Then yesterday we got the news that No Man’s Sky Update 6.2 was named Remnant and would be focused on updates for exocraft in general and the colossus exocraft in particular.
The update has landed and when you log into the game you will get a brief list of changes that have arrived.
Or, if you prefer, there is the Sean Murray follow up emoji based feature list.
And then there the actual release notes, which are copious in length, so I am just going to pick out some highlights.
- COLOSSUS CUSTOMISATION
- The Colossus Exocraft can now be customised with a number of aesthetic and utility modules, including a tippable flatbed for transporting hauls of industrial waste, and a mountable furnace, for processing materials while on the road.
- The cabin alternatives for the Colossus also include new cockpit interiors that reflect their external geometry.
- The Appearance Modifier for the player, and the Geobay for the Colossus Exocraft can now both store up to 6 named appearance configurations.
As noted, the colossus exocraft seems to be at the heart of this update. So you can trick out yours even more than you could before.
Then there is stuff to do in your colossus.
- INDUSTRIAL WASTE COLLECTION AND SALVAGE
- Industrial waste can now be found on planets featuring salvageable scrap, distributed in small piles and large heaps.
- These scrap worlds also feature a new building type, the Waste Processing Plant: highly interactive facilities where scrap-hunters can extract recycled resources and earn rewards for cleansing planets of debris.
- Double-tooting the Colossus horn while parked at a Waste Processing Plant valuation scale will initiate the control panel interaction.
- The Colossus can utilise the Exocraft Radar to pinpoint the location of nearby processing plants and waste heaps.
- A small tutorial mission has been added to guide new scrap-hunters.
- A new Scrap Salvaging & Industrial Waste entry has been added to the guide.
- A set of new player titles are available for accomplishments in scrap hauling and waste processing.
- These titles also unlock a number of customisation modules for the Colossus Exocraft.
In addition to the exocraft changes, we are also getting a gravity gun to play with.
- THE GRAVITINO COIL
- A new gravity-manipulation device for the Multi-Tool, the Gravitino Coil, is now available at the Space Anomaly or at planetary Waste Processing Plants.
- A number of moveable objects can be magnetised and launched with the Gravitino Coil, including industrial waste, golden balls at planetary ruins, spheres fabricated by the
- Sphere Creator base part, combat supplies dropped by Sentinel drones, and Sentinel drones themselves.
- Sentinels will be stunned for a short period after being launched from the Gravitino Coil.
Other Updates and Fixes
The Remnant update came with the usual host of updates and fixes across the game, the biggest of which is likely that players on the Nintendo Switch now have access to corvettes. They have been left out of the corvette fun since the Voyagers update landed back in August.
Go Team Switch! There at last! Also, it sounds like performance might be considerably better on the original Switch.
Expedition 21: Remnant
Big updates come with an expedition, and Remnant is no exception. Expedition 21 is pitched as:
Join the community in a time-limited expedition, staged in the sands of a single planet. Drive cross-country and strip the desert of dangerous industrial remnants.
It sounds like it will be trucks in the sandbox.
How that will play with a lot of people on the same planet… we shall have to is. But it is live and ready to go in game, you just have to drop on into the anomaly and go to the expedition console.
Wasn’t I just moaning about not having an expedition to run? Well here we go! I’ll be jumping on this for sure.
But maybe not until the weekend. I have seen a few issues pop up on Reddit about the update and the expedition. This is pretty normal and we will probably get a 6.2.1 update before this post goes live. Welcome to software development.
Then there is, of course, a trailer to go with the Remnant update that shows off the many changes to the colossus exocraft.
And there are also Twitch drops, which should be kicking off today.
I always get the Twitch drops as they tend to include a number of quality items.
As for the update overall… it seems interesting. I will grant you that exocraft have not been my favorite aspect of the game up to now. I have fiddled with them off and on, but never really found them to be a key to any of my fun. I mean, if I can move around in a ship… or later, an even more useful corvette… I am not sure driving slowly over the terrain is ever going to be a big draw.
But this is probably the last named update before the big 10th anniversary update. It could be a preview of something bigger to come on the bases front. We will have to wait and see.
