A Look into March 2024 Destruction in EVE Online

The March Monthly Economic Report for EVE Online landed last week, about when we have come to expect it these days.

EVE Online nerds harder

As usual, I am going to focus mostly on destruction. You can find things about the general New Eden economy here:

Overall Summary

With March we’re back to a 31 day month, so it is no surprise that, with two more days that February in which to make things explode, EVE Online players managed to blow up 493,867 ships, structures, and capsules, an uptick from the 446,701 that went the month before.

That comes out to 15,931 losses per day in March, an uptick over the 15,403 losses per day in February.  So there were more days and capsuleers were busier to the tune of more than 500 kills on average each of those days.

Likewise, when it comes to ISK value, a total of 46.19 trillion ISK was destroyed in March, up from 40.52 trillion in February, with the average ISK loss per day in March running at 1,490 billion ISK per day, up from 1,397 billion ISK per day the previous month.

Time to drag out my average losses per day chart now that we’re three months into 2024, as there is enough data for a line to start forming.

Average losses per Day – March 2024 Edition

It looks to be very mush on track with 2021, which started off as a solid year with.  We had the huge battles at M2-XFE and World War Bee was still raging.  Then CCP decided to screw up the economy and make ships, especially capital ships, too expensive to lose.  I bring this up for the nth time because the MER has a new chart that shows relative ship prices over time, with 2018 as the baseline amount.

Mar 2024 – Ship and Module Price Index

You can see the big bubble in ship prices, the year of disappointment as CCP leadership seemed determined to drive players from the game.  As you can see, they did eventually ease up, but still, three years later, haven’t solved the mineral bottleneck (isogen) that continues to keep ship and module prices well above the baseline.

Anyway, my average kills per day chart continues to track fairly close to Jester’s chart of the last four years of average players online.  His 30 day rolling average will always put his line somewhat offset from mine, but they still track.

Average Daily EVE Online Players – March 2024 Edition

Finally, for this section, the run of losses by day over the course of the month.

March 2024 – Losses per day

Nothing particularly surprising on that chart.  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the usual suspects for peaks on any month, and on no days did the pattern of ISK losses and the count of losses look particularly out of whack.

Top 20 Most Frequent Losses by Class and Hull

Once more, what ship classes and specific hulls were blown up the most in New Eden last month.

Shuttles remain high on the list.  I know, they are cheap and disposable, but there is more going on there which I will get to later.

Hulls Lost only Once This Month

This month, setting aside the POS modules and fighter groups, didn’t see much interesting being lost just once.

Hull Count
Avatar 1
Boobook 1
Civilian Amarr Shuttle 1
Civilian Caldari Shuttle 1
Erebus 1
Hubris 1
Leviathan 1
Loggerhead 1
Pharolux Cyno Beacon 1
Shapash 1
Violator 1
Wyvern 1

The Shapash was the only AT ship lost in March, and that was only the second one destroyed in game.

Then there is the Boobook, that special edition Caldari shuttle that blocks cargo scanners, which was trying to slip something out of Jita.

The Violator is a Pax East 2013 corvette that has a boost to webs.

The rest seem about the norm.  It seems like we lose one Wyvern a month.

Top 20 Total ISK Lost by Hull Type

What were the hulls that made up the ISK losses in March.

Naglfar                  88 403.52 billion 0.87% 4585.47 million

Again, lots of capsules add up.  Seven of the top 20 were expensive battleships… though given how many Praxis hulls were lost, they didn’t cost as much per unit than the Vargurs that rang in at almost 2.5 billion a pop.

And so many Ishtars.  Not a hugely expensive hull, but even they add up when they are the 10th most destroyed hull of the month.

Top 20 Regions by ISK and Hull Losses

The Citadel and Pochven topped the ISK list, while The Forge ran away with the total hull count, though that was padded by some of the usual suspects that I’ll get to below.

On the ISK side of the chart, Jita, Ahbazon, and Tama are not all that surprising, being places where lots of capsuleers end up, while Perimeter was boosted by its own event in March with the destruction of two TTC Sotiyos.  That put it on CCP’s chart for battles… something I wish they would just break out as an actual chart and not an HTML doc you have to mouse over for data.

Perimeter and 2,155 participants

While the top null sec system was the Imperium capital of 1DQ1-A, which included the Avatar up in the “hulls lost once” section.  Another lesson in “don’t accept random fleet invites.”

On the kill count side, Uitra once again tops the list, which makes me wonder, no doubt not for the last time, what is being exploited by killing thousands of shuttles every month?

Here is what was destroyed in Uitra in March 2024.

Hull Count Sum of ISK Lost
Caldari Shuttle 7383 163.13 million
Amarr Shuttle 5952 128.14 million
Gallente Shuttle 2665 39.41 million

Catalyst 1 3.90 million
Coercer 1 9.61 million
Griffin 1 .43 million
Incursus 1 .80 million
Magnate 1 .36 million
Tristan 1 .61 million

The ISK amount lost is almost trivial, but that is 18,035 shuttles destroyed in Uitra, more than one third of all the shuttles destroyed in New Eden in March.  Again, I don’t understand what is gained, but it keeps on happening every month.

Top 20 Corporations for ISK Destroyed

Finally, just to round out the stats for the month, here are some corporation stats starting with which corporations destroyed the most value in ISK.

I suppose I could have kept it to player formed corporations, but then I couldn’t do a shout out to the NPCs of Vigilant Tyrannos who help even up the books in Abyssal Deadspace, Wormholes, and Pochven.  Doing Bob’s work out there team.

Sure, some of these corps make the list out of sheer size.  I helped out KarmaFleet in March, not that they needed me.  But for effeciency of kills you have to give a nod to Big Willies PVP Madness and Clipped Wingz who extracted the most ISK per kill.  Both did so as high sec gankers.  Once again, crime pays in New Eden.

Top 20 Corporations for ISK Lost

Then, on the flip side, which corps lost the most ISK to destruction in March.

For whatever reason, Blood Raider Strongholds count, though killing NPC ships generally does not.  The strongholds also appear over on zKillboard.  Is something mis-classified?

That aside, at the top of the list is Scan Stakan which, as far as I can tell, is just all in on taking every fight they can get.  Their killboard is littered with losses.  They get some decent kills now and then, but not enough to make the top 20 on the ISK killed side of the equation. (They were in 31st place for March, blowing up 164.77 billion ISK.)  No doubt NCDot wouldn’t let them join with a red killboard, but if they’re having fun then killboards don’t matter.

So it goes, another month in New Eden.
