Greed Steed Buzz Kill

I dropped a note to a friend of mine who is more into the game than anybody else I know to find out if she had purchased a shiny new pony yet.  I got this in reply:

Almost.  It looked pretty cool on the website.  When I logged in, I saw one.  Cool.  Then I saw three more when I turned the corner.  Then I saw a whole flock of them (is a group of celestial mounts a ‘flock’?  Can’t be a herd, they fly…) up at Krasus’ Landing, and it kinda killed it for me.

Ooops, the status symbol got too common!  Not unexpected, I guess, when the queue for purchasing the steed and the new pet got to be 140,000 orders deep.

In flying around Krasus’ Landing this morning, a rather off-peak time, Greed Steeds were quite in evidence.  My own current flying mount might be a more unique sight at the moment.

Dude, where did you get that?

So if you are “that guy on the horse,” the one standing at some well traveled public intersection sitting on your new mount so that everybody can see it, you’re probably going to want to pick some other mount from your collection to show off.

Dash: But Dad always said our powers were nothing to be ashamed of, our powers made us special.
    Helen: Everyone’s special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

I fail to see why other people having an item you do devalues the item in question. Let’s take a few examples:

What if people had the same car as you? What if people had the same friend as you? What if people even played the same game as you? I honestly don’t understand how others having what you do devalues what you have.

DDM – if everyone has one, it’s not cool and unique and doesn’t make you stand out – it makes you a sheep :)

Don’t get me wrong, I AM a sheep more often than not. I have my Lil’ KT and Panda Monk and authenticator puppy. But $25 worth of sheep? Not this time, not yet, anyway. But if it was an unrestricted 310% mount? Then absolutely. (I’m one of those fence-jumping sheep.)

That plays into what I didn’t like about the limited offer and waiting queue. Blizzard have very intelligent people and data at their disposal.

I think the way they sold this is sleazy. They knew if they just put it for sale without a queue or limited, that people would quickly lose that feeling of importance, so they had to sell more, in a shorter time frame.

In comes limited offer and waiting queue.

@ Jeremy S. – I have seen a couple of people refer to the steed being a “limited offer” but I have yet to see anything actually in writing from Blizzard to that effect.

Is this a limited offer in the sense that they will only sell so many or it will only be available for a very short period of time? Or is it limited in the way any offer to sale might be considered limited, in that some day they might take it down and put something else up for sale instead?

The Blizzard FAQ on the subject says this:

How long will these Pet Store pets and mounts be available?

We do not currently have any plans to remove these pets or the mount from the Pet Store. The Blizzard Store purchasing page will provide information on any changes to availability.

So I am wondering from where this “limited” idea is coming.

I’m with DDM. I bought mine because I wanted it for me, not because I thought it would make me look special. I was flapping about Dalaran on it this morning because that’s where I happened to be. (And I don’t particularly appreciate being called a sheep because of it.)

Thanks for the link, though! *grin*
