A Look into September 2023 Destruction in EVE Online

The EVE Online Monthly Economic Report landed this week, so it is time to dig into the destruction numbers to see what happened in September.

EVE Online nerds harder

For those wanting the wider information or deeper details, here are the usual links:

Going straight into the top level numbers for destruction, in September CCP recorded 397,646 losses in the killdump.csv file, which put the count about 10K above last month despite having one fewer day, though the ISK value of losses was 34.9 trillion ISK in value, putting the cost of losses down by about 5 trillion ISK.

That put September up from August, which was the low point for my ongoing kills per day metric.

  • January – 13,729.96 kills per day
  • February – 14,307.75 kills per day
  • March – 14,878.67 kills per day
  • April – 13,663.50 kills per day
  • May – 13,028.03 kills per day
  • June – 13,175.07 kills per day
  • July – 13,959.19 kills per day
  • August – 12,502.19 kills per day
  • September – 13,254.87 kills per day

(For past years, I did monthly stats from 2020 forward here.)

That puts Sep 2023 ahead of the past couple of years.  Not a lot, but 2023 is still ahead of 2022 and the effects of CCP’s mishandling of the in-game economy.

Average hull losses per day, 2020 to Sep 2023

I will compare this against Jester’s updated average logged in player chart.

2020 through 2023 compared

You can see the similarity of the lines, though the 30 day average of the lower chart does mean that upticks show up… about 30 days later than my strictly month based numbers.  Imagine that, the math works.

So what did blow up in New Eden in September. I’ll start, as usual with the top 20 grouped by ship class and specific hull types.

Class  Count Hull  Count
Capsule        111,258 Capsule        110,327

Covert Ops             3,054 Cormorant             2,754

As usual, capsules at the top, then lots of shuttles and corvettes, followed by frigates and destroyers, with some spice in there like MTUs and Kikimoras.

Then we flip the hull count upside down to see what was blown up exactly once in September.

The Laelaps on the list was an AT XVII prize ship, while the Mamba won’t be special for long but that particular loss was the first of the new Guristas pirate faction destroyer.  Speaking of pirate factions, that Chemosh is the Blood Raiders dreadnought, and looks like it was only the fourth one lost on zKillboard.

Otherwise, no special shuttles like last month, just the usual range of POS towers and modules.  The POS will be forever in New Eden.

As for how much losses cost, the top 20 hulls when sorted by total value lost in September looks like this.

Hull  Count Sum of ISK Lost ISK Value Per Loss
Capsule        110,327 2,665.73 billion 24.16 million
Vargur                601 1,320.10 billion 2,196.50 million

Orca                206 316.12 billion 1,534.54 million
Astrahus                198 308.89 billion 1,560.06 million

Capsules always win by sheer volume, but there were trillion ISK in Vargus, Lokis, and Ishtars blown up in September, and nearly a trillion ISK in Paladins and Tengus.

When we switch that around to the most expensive ships to lose on a per hull basis September looks like this.

Hull  Count Sum of ISK Lost ISK Value Per Loss
Erebus                     1 74.21 billion 74.21 billion

Chemosh                     1 4.67 billion 4.67 billion
Providence                  21 97.03 billion 4.62 billion

I was a bit surprised at the total for the X-Large Ship Maintenance Arrays, but then I looked one of the kill mails and saw how much stuff was in one of them.  And none of it dropped for the attackers.  That Chemosh seems a bit under valued, and the Laelaps… well, there are none on the market ever, as with most AT ships, so its value is speculative at best.

On the regional stats, after a couple months of other regions topping the chart, The Forge, home of Jita, returns to the number one position.

Pure Blind and the null sec regions around it saw a decline from previous highs, though I suspect those might jump a bit for the October MER given the offensive Fraternity tried to execute last week.

Just outside of the top 20, landing in the 21st spot for hulls destroyed, was Yasna Zakh, the new region and home of Zarzakh, the system introduced at Fanfest.  5,669 ships and pods were blown up there as people explored the new location.

And when we get to the system level rankings of losses we see Zarzakh take its place in the upper half of the top 20.

With Zarzakh making its New Eden debut and being a bit of a curiosity I thought my final data grid for the post ought to be a listing of the ships, by hull type, lost in Zarzakh in September.

And then I saw the list, which included 221 different hulls.  I mean, people felt emboldened to fly just about anything into Zarzakh once those Jovian stargates went online I guess.  I thought about maybe limiting the list hulls that had at least 10 losses, which would get us to a more manageable 97 varieties.

Then I figured what the hell, it is just text.  222 rows of text in a grid, but it isn’t like I made you download a gigabyte image or some such.  So here is the list.

Vengeance 1 43.73 million
Victorieux Luxury Yacht 1 124.48 million
Vigil Fleet Issue 1 18.45 million
Worm 1 104.69 million

The 5,669 losses total up to just over 235 billion ISK in value destroyed.

While capsules made up 16 billion ISK of that, those were spread out over almost 1,900 losses.  My favorite is the 13 Lokis that came in at over 10 billion ISK in total.  T3 strategic cruisers are expensive.

That is what I have for September… if you managed to scroll down this far.  For October we will probably get a look at how Fraternity’s offensive in the north fared.
