STO Open Beta Poll

Here I sit, 10 hours into the Star Trek Online open beta client download and about 40% complete.  Come on FilePlanet download manager!

That has given me some time to go look at other posts about open beta.  Some are quite good and provide valuable information or perspectives.  And some are… a bit tedious.

So, in absence of anything else to post at the moment, I thought I would do a poll.

I also figured out how to resolve that “poll doesn’t wrap long answers” issue I was having.  Go me.  Of course, I got word wrapping to work, but now it forces me to use the default poll style.  How like life.

Now back to downloading.

Took me 5 hours to download on my desktop direct from the download manager on my desktop and my laptop completed the download while I was sleeping. I updated both computer before going to work this morning. I launched the game, but couldn’t log in yet, but it was definately enough of a peak to make this day at work seem extremely long!!!

I find complaints about open beta somewhat annoying, as most are easily answered by “that’s because its beta”. Of course some are valid, and if overall the response is “don’t launch for 3 months”, that’s informative, but all too often you read “it was really laggy, the starting area was overcrowded, I had no idea what I was doing, bla bla” stuff.

Hype is fine because that’s the point of an open beta and you should be excited for a new gmae, and as long as people shy away from “This is the greatest MMO ever, and I’ll be playing for years” based on the character creator and starter quests, all good.

It will have the best fishing ever. Imagine space fly rods with impulse driven lures that will let you drop your line with incredible precision from the hanger deck of your ship in orbit around the planet.

    Or something.

What, don’t you have a at least a Core2 Duo Mac Mini of yours?

I expect glitches. I don’t expect that the company’s launcher, news feed, client, game website, and forums all intermittently crashing. That’s not Open Beta, thats Poor Planning. That said, the five minutes I’ve been in the game thus far were entertaining.

BTW, why did you wait until now to download the client? I’ve had that shiny shortcut icon beckoning to me everyday for the last week or so.

It requires a Core2 Duo, because of the fishing. Jack Emmert probably said – “we have learned from previous effort that if you want something in the game, you need to include it from start. Thus we scrapped a few less necessary elements to be able to bring you Fishing – Federation style. It will be tough on your computer, but it will be worth it!”

After reading the “hype” I decided to give STO a shot. I decided to try the BitTorrent approach and so far it’s going to take around 4.5 hours.

I used to be a big ST fan in the past, but have let my interest slide of late. In terms of STO I don’t know too much about it. Is it similar to EVE Online in terms of character advancement or more like WoW? Also, is there a single shard like EVE? Just wondering…here goes nothing!
